Show - Sunday Morning- - (Tljc pa Salt £akc (Tribune n i MarcTi 10 5 n rm nn : JUDli L 1910 ) 'm iu J last July a large force of forest fighters in the Siskiyou Na- Forest Oregon were malt-lin- g rapid progress in extinguishing a eerious blaze when to their dismay their food ran out Under ordinary conditions it would have been necessary to truck LATE aupplies 31 miles over mountain roads and to pack them by horse 22 miles over a difficult trail A radio message to the Fortland headquarters of the U S Forest Service iaved the day Within two hours an airplane in four trips dropped 1857 pounds of supplies using the parachute method Items transported included groceries meats vegetables grains first aid equipment bed rolls radio tubes and batteries All 'chutes functioned properly and the loss was negligible Incidents like these are common in the annals of the U S Forest Service these days Airplanes have a place in the Federal system of fighting the red enemy of valuable timberland Airplanes have been found valuable in scouting above bad fires in patrolling areas during periods when heavy smoke blankets obscure the vision of the ground lookouts and in spotting fires caused by lightning They furnish a means of direct vertical view and without the Usual interference from intervening ridges The airplane is mobile and in the quickest possible time can go to the "blaze circle above it determining its status its location and character of the material in which it is burning Use of aircraft by the Forest Service has been most common in northern Idaho western Montana Oregon Washington and California but planes are now beginning to play an important part in the protection of the national forests of Minnesota and the Lake States The Forest Service has been conducting an exhaustive scries of tests aimed at greater efficiency in transportation of men and equipment by airplane Experiments have been made to determine the feasibility of dropping water chemical retardants and explosives upon forest fires New emergency landing fields especially in the Western states have been built or improved in the regions least accessible by roads Extensive experimental work has been carried on in California in fighting fires by dropping chemicals from the air d yi Vf When a fire is discovered in rugged ground crews are dispatched from the most convenient points and set to building fire control lines They must have food camp equipment tools and medicines Foods packed with great ingenuity may he assembled flown to the designated area which has been marked with flags or a smudge fire by the ground crews and" dropped either-wit- h or without parachutes to the waiting men below A package may contain vegetables on top canned goods in the middle and loaves of bread on the bottom Bread has been found to be such an excellent and indestructible shock absorber that forest workers have dubbed the lower layer of such packages War leave of influenza in its w ake Ohio ferrets will help combat the deadly disease Ferret breeders southwest of Cleveland are filling rush orders for laboratories all over the United States where the streamlined agile cousins of the polecat are literally used as "guinea er is especially useful because it usually floats above the brush and small trees and makes it easier for the ground crew to spot packages that fall some distance from the target In many parti of the national forests this type of package dropped from airplanes is and will continue to be a vast aid in equipping amt supplying firefighting crews Foresters have accustomed themselves to the use of lueh terms as free descent loose package yid retarded descent In the loose package system a quantity of supplies is discharged from the plane loosely tied in large sacks with flapping ends The loose flapping end meets a certain amount of air resistance and the packages land with less impact This plan is useful in delivering small articles on a large scale For heavier articles and larger quantities the parachute method is most practicable Even cases of eggs and radio apparatus are dropped with minimum damage to container and contents Applying the same principles of retardation special packs are devised to spread the load and other types to prevent the articles in the bottom of the package being damaged by the impact of the articles on top In the last year Forest Service engineers have advanced to the point of deCans veloping standardized packages back-countr- y "bread-springs- ” Much of the 200000 pounds of such e commissary carried in a year now settles down from the planes attached to parachutes The Forest Service has devised a special parachute made from the almost universally available material which can burlap be made at very low cost A good woolsack will make a parachute about seven by seven feet To its corners are fastened rope ahrouds 17 feet long to be tied to the bundle of food to cans of gasoline or to sacks of parts for the pumps To its top approaches the target while heading directly into the wind When the bundle is dropped the pilot begins to turn so that the dropper may watch hi The dropper spot the marksmanship landing and marks each landing on a map w ith referenee to the marking aig- nal or smudge fire built by the ground crew When all packages have been dropped the map also is dropped to the ground crew to assist in finding all the packages No easy job has the dropper He ha to wear goggles to keep oil particles from his eyes and he wears a lineman’ belt and strap securely fastened to a structural member inside the fuselage He sights his target by the vertical door jamb and drops the pilot load when directly over the target He then drop the firvt load nf supplies at the same distance on the approach side as the pilot load foil beyond the target If ha has made a good landing ha will aim subsequent packages at the same spot By a slight change in direction the pilot can make allowances for wind drift The dropper holds both the load and the ’chute with one hand sometime assisting the shove with a foot In dropping the ’chute he must be sure that the load also is free or he may foul the tail parts The of the
