Show V ashington postmaster general hitchcock reports that the postal savings bank system has been more successful than seasonably leason ably could have been expected there are 48 sec see ond class post offices in as many states tates where the banks have been in operation since jan 3 until feb 28 inclusive 3 accounts were opened and separate deposits were made and the average of each deposit nas vas 2150 only accounts were closed and the net amount on deposit nas mas the aggregate tion of the 48 cities approximates statistical experts of the post office department have estimated that if the postal savings system hould be patronized in the same pro portion when it Is established at all money order post offices the total amount on deposit after one year years s operation would be post master general hitchcock is engaged in preparing for the establishment of additional postal savings banks an appropriation of having been made by the recent congress foi the extension of the system cincinnati the strike of the white firemen on the cincinnati new or leans and texas pacific railroad was declared oft off after an agreement had been signed by representatives of tho the brotherhood of locomotive firemen and Engl Engi nemen and horace baker general manager of the road the agreement Is to all appearances F a compromise both sides yielding sev bev eral points in dispute in short the agreement holds that employees who went out on the strike shall be rein stated the company however reserves the right to refuse to employ any firemen who committed an act of violence during the strike negro firemen cannot be employed north of oakdale tenn the percentage of negro firemen employed jan 1 1911 shall not be exceeded hereafter and negro firemen cannot be assigned to more than one half of passenger or preferred freight runs washington the decision of the postoffice post office department to prevent its employed emp loyes from becoming affiliated with labor unions was made known in a let ter given to the public by postmaster general hitchcock the letter was written on march 13 by second As distant postmaster general stewart to superintendent alex grant of the rail way mall mail service the letter says referring to the reports that postal clerks at various points are forming lodges of secret organizations of rail way postal clerks I 1 desire that steps be taken at once to acquaint all in the service that such action is regarded as fal inimical mical to the interests of the gov wilmington del five hundred workmen employed in the shops of the pennsylvania railroad were dis charged it Is stated the retrench ment was made because of insufficient revenue during march the men were promised employment reemployment re next month the layoff lay off order extends to all shops generally on the pennsylvania tern tem the men laid off have been paid by the hour workers who are on a monthly wage escape the order boston no member of this union can violate or be a party to any viola eions of the building laws brici lay ers union no 3 declared last week it was reported that a certain class of contractors were endeavoring to evade the laws and were erecting un sate safe buildings and charges were made against several members of the union who work or are working on the jobs ia question philadelphia in line with its retrenchment trench ment plan followed in the spring season of each year the pennsylvania railroad company has issued orders reducing the working time of its shop employed emp loyes from fifty five hours a week to forty five hours an official of
