TODD CROMAR/U.S. Air Force 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' entertain a new generation BY STEVE SALLES Hilltop Times movie critic Once again, I cringe a little when I see beloved cartoon characters from the '60s turned into some money-making silliness for a new, unappreciative moviegoer that has no history with said characters. It's hard to understand what a wonderful part of growing up it was to see "Rocky and Bullwinkle" on afternoon black and white television. And the duo brought along such entertaining partners as "Fractured Fairy Tales," "Dudley Do-Right" and "Peabody and Sherman," all from the wacky efforts of producer/genius Jay Ward. Fortunately, there appears to be a certain amount of due reverence offered in this new film, which should make fans of the old cartoons mostly happy. Mr. Peabody (voiced by "Modern Family's" Ty Burrell) is one extraordinary dog. He managed to graduate from Harvard as Vale-dog-torian. He's an inventor, business tycoon, Nobel Prize winner, gourmet chef, master musician and a world- *** THE FILM: 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' STARRING: The voices of Ty Burrell, Max Charles, Stephen Colbert, Leslie Mann and Allison Janney BEHIND THE SCENES: Directed by Rob Minkoff (The Haunted Mansion: `Stuart Little'); filmed at DreamWorks Animation PLAYING: Noon, Runs 92 minutes. He finds a young boy, Sherman, abandoned in an alley, and convinces the courts to let him adopt the youngster, but he insists the lad call him "Mr. Peabody" and not "Dad." To supplement Sherman's early education, Mr. Peabody builds the WABAC machine, which is a time-travel portal into the history of the world. His be- Sherman (Max Charles) asks a skeptical Mr. Peabody (Ty Burell) if he can take control of the WABAC. lief: Why read about it, when you can see it happen for yourself? So you can imagine, Sherman is quite well-prepared when he eventually gets to school. However, there's this cranky girl, Penny, voiced by Ariel Winter also of "Modern Family" fame (she's Alex). Penny does not take kindly to being out- shone by this upstart Sherman. She bullies him. He bites her. It all leads up to a parents' dinner meeting with a school counselor aimed at taking Sherman away from Mr. Peabody. The kids sneak off into the WABAC machine, forcing Peabody to go after them into the past, which includes a visit to ancient Egypt, the Trojan Wars and a stopover with Leonardo da Vinci. True to the intent of the original cartoon, this film actually celebrates intelligence and critical thinking. I think kids will be challenged, grown ups will See MOVIE I Page 10 |
