A class offering a new way of looking at creating a landscape painting was well attended at The Landing on Nov. 9. Women who attended were offered a chance to get together with others and approach the skill with a "new twist." Dessert, wine and painting go together like fine art BY SARAH STOLL Hilltop Times correspondent R efreshments, including wine selections and sweets and plenty of laughs were abundant, Saturday, Nov. 9, at the Painting with a Twist event hosted at The Landing. Guests gathered for this "ladies night out" of painting and wine with dessert. One participant, Dorothy Blackman, came to this event not knowing what to expect but enjoyed "hanging out with so many different ladies from the base and even bumping into moms I've met from my kids' school." Guests received a canvas, painting supplies, and step-bystep instruction on how to create a painting that was pre-chosen for the group. In this case, the group painted a beautiful fall scene with warm colors and natural tones. Blackman painted with hopes of "complementing another photo" in her home, and despite not claiming to be an artist, "did this to have fun and enjoy a night out." Erika Suzzi also attended the event with "no idea what it was" but had a lot of fun and enjoyed meeting new people. Participants paid $35 for the two hour, step-by-step course, and $10 for wine and delicious desserts. Matt Vacher, the owner of the "Painting with a Twist" studio in Murray, assisted at the event and noted that his favorite part was watching "everybody having a blast." He noted that participants were not afraid to laugh and ask plenty of questions. Some individuals who live on base and go to the studio in Murray, thought it would be a successful event here on Hill and made the suggestion for the activity. Their assumptions were correct, and the event quickly sold out- even after organizers expanded the guest list. The studio staff hope to return to Hill again soon due to strong interest. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, presented 95-year-old retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. H. Grant Keeler, of Layton, with a Prisoner of War Medal during the first quarter break at the University of Utah football game Nov. 9 at Rice Eccles Stadium. Keeler was a prisoner of war for almost six months during World War II, after the plane he was piloting was shot down over Germany. "World War II veterans are some of the greatest Americans we've ever known, and as we honor our nation's veterans this weekend, it's my true privilege to stand with Lt. Col. Kee- ler and present him with this great honor," Hatch said in a prepared statement. Hatch called Keeler a "truly courageous and patriotic American. Even after being held in two POW camps, he continued to serve in the United States military for more than 26 years." The plane Keeler was piloting was shot down over Merseburg, Germany, on Nov. 2, 1944. Keeler and his crew were immediately captured by German troops, and he was first held at the POW Camp Stalag LUFT III, 60 miles southeast of Berlin. Then, because of the advancing Russian Army, Keeler was moved to Stalag VII A at Moosburg, Germany, 30 miles northeast of Munich. He was freed April 29, 1945, by U.S. Gen. George Patton's 3rd Army Corps. He continued to serve in the U.S. Air Force, ultimately retiring from active duty as a lieutenant colonel at Da Nang Air Base in South Vietnam in 1971. The Prisoner of War Medal was not established until 1985; many years after Keeler had been in captivity. Hatch was able to procure this medal after it was brought to his attention that Keeler had not received all the medals he had earned. Joining Hatch on the field for the presentation were members of Keeler's family and officials from the University of Utah. i* 1 1 1 1 1*N 1111 4'94 4, Doev°e retell It N M LS#278339 IMO; III ee l People Who Help People MILITARY ACTIVE RESERVE $500 un MPG OF INetUDING HYBRIDS! $500 BONUS CASH 'Now MAZDA CX5 PER MONTH * 39 mo s. ign and Drive.
