MARY LOU GORNY/Hilltop Times Richard Wheelock, oldest Marine present observes as the youngest Marine present, Zack Simon, takes a bite of his birthday cake as part of the birthday celebration for the Marines held at a Layton restaurant on Nov. 8. BIRTHDAY From page 7 if we remain honorable and always faithful to our nation, our Constitution and each other. Happy Birthday, Marines. Semper Fidelis." A few military spouses attended with their spouses, and the brief ceremony, solemnly carried out, was followed with a traditional birthday cake ceremony. The cake, decorated with the Marine Corps emblem and seal, was cut with the eldest Marine, Cpl. (Ret.) Richard Wheelock, receiving the first piece of cake. He then served a piece to the youngest member present, former U.S. Marine Cpl. Zack Simon, to symbolize the passing of experience and knowledge to younger generations of Marines. Wheelock was born Jan. 22, 1928, and enlisted Aug. 1, 1946, in the Marines Corps. He served during World War II and was called up during the Korean War working on U.S. Marine aircraft. He said that it was difficult to fully describe in words his experience as a Marine, when asked about his experiences prior to the cake LINK From page 7 This event was not only an opportunity to learn a large amount of information and gather ideas for resources on and off base, but was also a starting place for new spouses to connect, cutting as he ate a small piece of pie from the buffet. Another Marine would understand it best, he said, providing a small card describing the camaraderie which Marines enjoy in terms of great honor, and with no disrespect to others. Baggiano, who retired as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 in the Marines, served as the official cake cutter, addressing the cake with a Marmeluke sword he provided for the ceremony. Baggiano reported the local celebration has drawn as many as 40 people in past years when it fell on a day when more people were working on the base. The celebration this year was held on Friday, Nov. 8, because Nov. 10 fell on a Sunday, even though it was considered a "down" Friday, with fewer folks working at the base due to shifts rotating in four days of 10 hour-shifts on alternating weeks. The following Monday, Nov. 11 was Veterans Day and the base was closed. Plans are already under way to determine what day to hold the celebration next year. For more information, contact Baggiano via email at bradbaggiano@msn.com or Bradley. baggiano@dla.mil .
