WOLF From page 7 operations military volunteers who serve as instructors. It is also a great opportunity for some participants who lost their parent at an early age to get an idea of the kind of heritage they have inherited and the chance to observe the special operations culture up close. "I got a lot out of the first year," said Cody Patton, a second-year peer counselor. "I really liked the support and I wanted to give back since I had the opportunity." He explained it was great that he got to hang around and learn from the leaders, to get a good look at what leadership was like and then be able to step forward when he was called on. Drawing on special forces from many areas of the military, instructors are exceptionally welltrained and experienced. Lisa Nance, SOWF Family Services representative, credits the tightknit special operations community with providing such well-qualified volunteers. On Sunday, as the campers were in the water, two representatives from Utah National Guard Special Forces were on hand to provide the specialized water training. While having loads of fun was the prime directive, the activity specifically set up was to have one leader give directions to two others paddling the canoe who were blindfolded, in order to get to shore. At some point most of the participants ended up in the water, generally having a good time. Maybe not so significant to some, but some of the campers had not had a lot of experience in the water, and this really helped to get the campers "feet wet." "I think that one of the most unique parts about this event is that the counselors, the secondyear junior counselors, are willing to come back and mentor," said Nance. "They are in college. These are students who have the commonality of losing a father (or in one case, a mother) so it is really an interesting dynamic to see them all coming together. There are no cliques." Kim Workman, VATC Corporate vice president, who was helping out with the camp noted the success leading into the effort: "(This year) we doubled the number of students." Camp organizers took all the feedback from the previous year and used it help sharpen their goals and aspirations for the learning experiences of the campers. The campers range in age from 14 to 21, and the majority of the first-year participants are contemplating their college plans. Sam Foster, a second year counselor, explained her own reasons for coming back. "I made a great group of friends (last year) and I thought it would be really fun to come back and help youth with the same experiences that we had." Foster also said the experience taught her a lot about what character- istics make a good leader. "I used to think a leader was somebody who is telling everyone what to do," she said. Last year when she participated in orienteering and geocaching she got the opportunity to see that to be a leader didn't mean you had to be "bossy." "I got to experience that and see what it was like," she explained. "I will come back as long as they want me to." .5,pfra Drive IN FREE TGIF FOOD!
