The Aerospace Heritage Foundation of Utah and Pioneer Flight, Order of Daedalians, will host the ceremonies. Hall was born in Storrs, Utah, in 1913, and received his wings as a naval aviator in 1939. His skill as a bomber pilot helped with the destruction of the Japanese aircraft carrier Shoho May 7 in the Battle of the Coral Sea. One day later, as U.S. and Japanese carriers exchanged attacks he shot down three aircraft, and brought himself and his aerial gunner safely back to the USS Lexington. His daughter, Lottie Hall of Olathe, Kansas, will speak briefly as will the son of another member of the Hall of Fame, Van Twelves of Glastonbury, Conn. BY SENIOR AIRMAN JAMIE JAGGERS W ASHINGTON 4 More than 8,000 money-saving ideas have cascaded into the Pentagon from across the Air Force this month. Air Force Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Larry Spencer launched the Airmen Powered by Innovation Challenge May 1, challenging uniformed and civilian Airmen to find places to save money across the service, no matter how big or small. "If there are things we can do better, if there are things we can stop doing, or if there are ideas (Airmen) have on how we can better manage our money ... we want to hear it," Spencer said. When Airmen click "submit," on one of two websites, their ideas fall directly into the hands of Spencer's team of action officers here, who dedicate their time to receiving ideas and tasking them out for consideration. "Chaotic, at best, is what it's like working in here, because all these ideas are flowing through considerably. Speaking to Pentagon reporters on background, two senior defense officials discussed details of the furlough, exemptions and stressed their intent to lessen its effects. Jack Rickards speaks at 75th SFS event BY KRISTA STARKS Hilltop Times correspondent T he wind carried the sound of bagpipes and gun fire across the gray sky Friday afternoon as a group gathered to honor law enforcement and security personnel who have fallen. In honor of Police Week the 75th Air Base Wing held a memorial retreat outside its headquarters to honor law enforcement officers lost in the line of duty. Retired Capt. Jack Rickards of the Salt Lake Police Department addressed the crowd. "As we look back on the sacrifices of our security forces and our local, state, and federal law enforcement officers; it is important to remember why they are so vital to the freedom and prosperity that we enjoy in this great country of ours," said Rickards. The National Law Enforcement Memorial, located in Washington, D.C, lists the names of law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. Dedicated Oct. 15, 1991, by former President George H. W. Bush there were 12 thousand names on the marble wall. With the addition of names so far this year there will now be 19,981 names, 31 of those names belonging to military officers. According to the National Law Enforcement Fund in the last 10 years an officer has been killed every 57 hours. "Essentially in a little over two days we lose a law enforcement officer and a family loses a loved one while performing their duties. At that rate, the memorial will be filled by the year 2050.
