Volunteers from 419th Fighter Wing, other Hill groups support DAV event BY KIM COOK Hilltop Times correspondent T he sun was just corning up over the ridge, high in the Uinta Mountains on Saturday, Aug 4. The first light cast a golden hue on the still blue waters of Soldier Creek Reservoir. As the fog lifted from the tributaries, I could see a few early anglers casting in the still water. When reaching the marina parking, it was bustling with boats, trailers and hustling volunteers preparing for the imminent arrival of honored guests, a Disabled American Veterans (DAV) group from Salt Lake City and the surrounding areas. The fourth annual DAV event, started in 2008 with about 13 vets and a handful See FISHING I page 8 Above, an excited and appreciative Vietnam vet, Flip Hollihan (center), is helped from the dock to an awaiting boat. Hollihan enjoyed fishing with the group at Soldier Creek Reservoir and caught several nice sized fish. Above, Army National Guardsmen, Staff Sgt Hall and Pvt. Thompson, and a female 419th Fighter Wing Reservist cook lunch for the DAV vets and volunteers. The chuck wagon was provided by the Army National Guard with food donated by several sponsors. Right, disabled veterans normal transportation was gladly traded for fishing boats for a sun-filled day on the water. |
