Show 11TI M S July 5, 2012 Roy plans patriotic celebration July 12 AIR FORCE TAKES GOLD 'Proud to be an American' part of city's 75th Diamond Jubilee BY KURT ANDERSON Roy 75th Year Committee member r R oy City, Incorporated in 1937, is elebrating its 75th anniversary throughout 2012. The pinnacle event organized by the 75th Diamond Jubilee Committee, "Proud To Be An American" will be held Thursday, July 12 at 7 p.m. in the Roy High School auditorium, 2150 W. 4800 South. According to committee chairman, Bob Dandoy, "This free, two hour stage production is to honor the United States of America, our flag and the military." VENTURA Hilltop Times staff 1 A lthough there have been many firework-restrictions across the Wasatch Front this season, local communities celebrated Independence Day and plan Pioneer Day celebrations with large firework displays on July 24. The month of July will be full of activities for residents to enjoy from breakfasts in several parks, 5K runs, parades galore, concerts and carnivals and as the sun sets on the last barbecue of the day firework events will fill the night skies. • New this year, on July 20, is Bountiful City's Handcart Day at Bountiful City Park, located at 400 N. 200 West. The celebration will begin at noon with games, rides, food and entertainment, with a parade beginning at 6 p.m. More than 2,000 young men from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Utah will be dressed in costumes, to tell the story of young stripling warriors described in the Book of Mormon. The entry has been in the planning stages for 10 years. Organizers say an entry of this magnitude will likely not occur again. The parade route will run up Main Street beginning at 1500 South and ending at another location at Bountiful City Park. The park will continue with activities on Saturday, July 21, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fireworks will begin at dusk that evening at Mueller Park Junior High School, located at 955 Mueller Park Road. • Roy City celebrates Roy Days on July 28 8 "We are pleased to feature a performance by the 23rd Army National Guard Band, an address by former U.S. Sen. and astronaut, E. "Jake" Garn, the national anthem sung by Weber State University Professor Dr. Karen Brookens and thoughts on freedom and sacrifice by Blake Wahlen, the son of Medal of Honor recipient, George Wahlen." Dalton Edwards, Roy High School Student Body vice president and state debate champion will also speak. Other highlights will include: D. Kent Norton as master of ceremonies, Roy's elementary students leading the Pledge of Allegiance, the Hill Air Force Base Honor Guard, United States flag "Walk of Honor," military vehicles and American Sign Language Interpreters.
