Show HILLTOP TIMES TIMES May 12, 2011 WEEK From page 1 law enforcement service member who has died in the service of their country recorded over the course of several decades. The legislation originally signed by President John F. Kennedy designated a day to honor law enforcement officers nationwide. Base events will include several activities in which off-base law enforcement agencies are invited. "It is a solemn occasion because it is sad to lose members of the Air Force and also law enforcement members who voluntarily put themselves in harm's way. However, it's a time for honoring them too for their bravery and courage," said Senior Airman Janey Blum. She said it was a way to respect their mission and also celebrate the fact that Americans have this freedom because of security forces efforts both at home and overseas. "Our men and women are doing an amazing job - they're defending the other bases (both on temporary duty missions and on deployments) and protecting the other Air Force missions so we can get the job done overseas," said Blum. Family activities on May 17 will include a visit by McGruff to the Child Development Center. Security forces will teach Hill Field Elementary students how to signal left, right and stop while riding bicycles in a mini bike rodeo. An easy obstacle course will also be set up for riders to negotiate. Stranger Danger will be taught that night at Gerrity Library on base with McGruff present as well. A torch run from the Roy Gate to the Southwest Gate will take place on May 20 by security forces members. A solemn assembly of all the flights involved in security forces will take place in front of Building 180 in a Retreat Ceremony on May 20, at 4 p.m. A wreath will be placed in honor of those lost while in service and Col. The majority of the items the groups come up with will typically be solvable at the installation level. Participants will vote on and forward 10 issues to the major command level at the end of the forum. The major command level will hold a similar review and prioritization process and up to 10 issues will be forwarded to Air Force Headquarters for its 2011 Air Force Caring for People Forum. "My first memories as a child were of people starving at the train stations." Daniel said his family received the visas from Sousa Mendes, a Portuguese diplomat who ignored the orders of his own government for the safety of war refugees fleeing from invading German military forces in the early years of World War II. Between June 16 and June 23, 1940, Mendes issued Portuguese visas free of charge to more than 30,000 refugees seeking to escape the Nazi terror. Of the 30,000 refugees, 12,000 were Jews. "It's possible for one person to change the course of history," Daniel said, thinking back on Mendes. Noemi's family wasn't lucky enough to escape Belgium, but instead spent much of the war in hiding. She said she'll never forget the day the U.S. Army arrived in the country. Having them there aggravated Floyd and that's when he pulled out a knife," said Stenquist. That's when Floyd grabbed the woman, holding a knife to her throat. Her son ran up to try to assist his mother when Floyd pushed the knife against his chest, pushing him away. It was during this that off-duty DAF police officer, Steve Batten, was walking out of the convenience store and ran to his vehicle to grab his baton and handcuffs. Batten identified himself and confronted Floyd to stop, said Stenquist. Floyd let go and fled the scene but was later located several blocks away and taken into custody. • IMOIMI cws Call TIME FOR TWO I I. 298 Layton, ACROSS UDE OM HAFB SOU 801 -825-08 GATE • Hill AFB Job Openings Site Internal civilian announcements are posted on the Air Force Personnel Center Web site.
