While the origin of similar events probably goes back to at least the Middle Ages, such gatherings became very popular in military (as well as civilian) circles worldwide in the 19th century as prosperity became relatively widespread. Accordingly, services and units brought members together in formal attire to enjoy fellowship, food, music, dancing and usually some other sort of entertainment, such as leaders providing "the view from the top" or one or another form of skill or talent. In the 19th century, balls were " held for a multitude of reasons, such as to expose newly eligible young adults for possible courtship, to celebrate the ascension of someone to power and to mark an occasion that society respects, such as a Fourth of July or inaugural ball. Hill Air Force Base's 1948 Air Force Day Ball occurred in conjunction with a "free to the public" Base Open House and Air Show. Utah Gov. Herbert B. Maw, along with the mayors of Ogden and Salt Lake City, and other dignitaries attended. The air show featured formation and single train flying of 16 F-51 Mustangs, B-47 Stratojet low-level flying, a B-24 Liberator simulating a bomb run, and highspeed passes by a prop-driven F-82 Twin Mustang and F-84 Thunderjet.
