BY LOUISE SEDLEVICIUS Registered Dental Hygienist M ost of us are aware of the importance a healthful diet plays in keeping ourselves fit and strong. Our oral health is no exception! The dental profession has long recognized the link between sound nutrition and good oral health. There is a growing concern about the record numbers of sugar-filled soft drinks, sweetened fruit drinks and non-nutritious snack foods that Americans are consuming these days. Eating patterns and food choices are important factors that may affect how quickly tooth decay may develop. The naturally-occurring bacteria in the mouth thrive on the starches and sugars found in many foods. When teeth aren't cleaned after eating, harmful, sticky plaque will form. The bacteria in the plaque use the sugar and starch to produce acids that can destroy the enamel of the tooth. The more often you eat and the longer foods are in your mouth, the more damage can occur. The foods we choose generally affect our overall health, including our teeth and gums. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Dietary Guidelines encourage consumers to limit intake of foods and beverages high in added sugars and to choose more healthful foods. What can you do? • Maintain a healthy diet. Eat a variety of healthful, nutritious food. Some of the best foods for healthy gums and teeth are those which contain vitamin C and calcium. Citrus fruits, strawberries and kiwifruit are good sources of vitamin C, while calcium can be obtained from most dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt. • Drink water more often. Water is not only important for a healthy body, but can help to rinse sugars and starches from your teeth. • Limit eating and drinking between meals. Each time you eat food that contains sugars or starches, the teeth are attacked by acids for 20 minutes or more. Foods such as cheese, raw vegetables or fresh fruit are good choices. .t • Opt for sugar-free versions of soft drinks, ; candy and gum. Carefree "Koolerz" chewing gum . is an excellent choice. "Koolerz" contains xylitol, • which has been shown to inhibit the growth of ; harmful bacteria in the mouth. ; • Brush and floss effectively each day. ! Feel free to ask your dental health care pro\ vider any questions you have about nutrition and ; oral health. We're happy to help!
