It just takes the right circumstances and fast reactions to prove that we have what it takes. Of course, some heroes stand out from others, much like the ones celebrated at the Red Cross's "Celebration of Local Heroes 2009." On March 24, six nominees and a crowd of supporters, family members, and more gathered in the Ogden Eccles Conference Center. The heroes came in all shapes and sizes — seven-yearold John Robinson saved his little brother from burning water, Jackie the Border Collie and her See HEROES I page 6 he Air Force Assistance Fund campaign officially kicked off with the March Madness basketball game March 23, with enlisted personnel vying against officers in a competitive game of basketball. The event featured special guests Laura Chukanov, Miss Utah USA, Tasha Smedley, Miss Utah Teen USA, who dispersed door prizes to fans throughout the game, and opera singer, Joshua Jensen, who sang the national anthem. Jensen has been immersed in military life, as his family has members in each military branch and his uncle retired from Hill AFB recently, and wanted to support the March Madness event out of his reverence for the military. "I believe in supporting the troops and helping people in any way possible," he said. "You shouldn't just stand by and say, 'That person needs help, but we can't help them because we just don't want to.' You need to have the courage to stand up and say, 'This isn't right.' Everyone needs help in their own way." Chukanov gained her appreciation for the military by listening to her grandfather's stories of his service in the Bulgarian navy. She was excited to be a part of a charity event for Hill AFB. "I've always been interested in Hill Air Force Base," said Chukanov. "I've always heard so much about it and how it is a big part of our economy in Utah. Having a tour of the base sounded incredible to me since I have never been up here before." Chukanov sees the AFAF campaign as a chance for others to give back to a staple of Utah's economy.
