Show \- HILLTOP TIMES Summer starts with base expo TIMES • May 17, 2007 11 Hill tax center proves to be a success BY MITCH SHAW 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs As the April 16 deadline for income taxfiling passed, many Americans breathed a sigh of relief knowing the task wouldn't have to be done again for another year. As the pressure started to mount and the days before the deadline grew thin, thanks to the Hill Air Force Base Tax Center, military members rested a little easier. "The tax center was a great success," said Tech. Sgt. Lowell Cook, 75th Contracting Squadron tax center volunteer. "All the volunteers were new at it this year, and it was new management, so it was all new blood, but we worked very hard to make it work." The Hill AFB Tax Center opened for business Jan. 24 and was available for use until Feb. 10 to all E-4s and below, as well as their dependents. The tax center was staffed with approximately 40 to 50 volunteers. "Some of our volunteers were true civilian volunteers, but most of these people were military members or civilians who are able to break away at least three hours per week to come in and help prepare tax returns," said James Tadje, 75th Air Base Wing chief of the Civil Law Division. According to Sergeant Cook, the tax center wouldn't have existed without the effort from the volunteers. "All the volunteers who were involved really put forth a great effort to make this thing work," he said. "It was a total team effort, and a lot of people worked hard to make it a success." Since the tax center's inception here at Hill AFB, it has saved military members an average of $300,000 per year in tax preparation costs while filing about 3,000 returns per year. "The tax center was great because it was free and it saved a lot of people a lot of money," said Capt. Jason Hull, 75 ABW Judge Advocate. "It's a good thing to have here on base. It's just a good service and gives people an alternative." With the overwhelming success of the tax center, plans are to continue with it in the future. "This is a huge benefit to our military people," Mr. Tadje said. "It saves them so much time and money. It's really here for them to use, so I would encourage all who can utilize this great service to do so."
