The month of March has been designated as National Nutrition Month and serves as a reminder for Airmen to improve their eating habits. With obesity leading to things like diabetes, cancer, and heart disease, it is crucial to have proper nutrition and stay at the appropriate weight range. "Nutrition is absolutely important for everyone, but with the unique demands that an Airman's duty entails, it's even more important for them," said Wanda Rivera, a Health and Wellness Center dietician. "In the Air Force, there is a strong need to be 'fit to fight'. I think it is generally accepted that an Airman's physical requirements are more difficult than those of the average citizen. There is an increased focus on staying in shape and meeting their body's demands." Ms. Rivera said that because of these requirements, oftentimes it can be hard for an Airman to find the time to consciously think about their diet and make healthy eating decisions. There are a few easy guidelines, however, that can be followed for improvement, she said. .... .--:... . . .. t Photos by Beth Young Whole wheat grains including The "It's Your Choice, Make It Healthy" program offers base commissary shoppers Information through "shelf talkers," mini pasta, bread, and brown rice should signs easily spotted by their distinctive green and gold colors. "Some people think that eating right can take the place of exercise," Ms. Rivera said. "They will soon find out that exercise and proper nutrition go hand in hand. If someone wants to loose weight they must make dietary changes and exercise. You can't choose one or the other, you have to do both." The Hill commissary is doing its part to help the base populous eat healthy. In addition to offering a range of organic food choices, it also has the "It's Your Choice, Make it Healthy" program, which offers shoppers information through "shelf talkers," mini signs easily spotted by their distinctive green and gold colors. The signs offer simple dietary tips based on the new Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The intent is not to endorse particular products, but to leave buying decisions to shoppers by offering some "food for thought." "We want our customers to know that we provide options," Mr. Davis said. "We hope that they do eat healthy and make those informed choices."
