Show SPORTS Hilltop Times August 4, 2005 Fit for Life program a go BYSHADWEST Hilltop Times staff Several hundred employees can't be wrong. That's the position leaders here took following the success of the Civilian Fit-for-Life Walk in April, which kicked off the Air Force Materiel Command's Civilian Fitness Program. "We have been looking at longer term options to encourage program participation,'* said Andy Flowers, Ogden Air Logistics Center Civilian Personnel director. "Several hundred employees expressed a desire to participate in a May 2005 make up for the 1-mile walk that was ultimately cancelled due to severe weather conditions.*1 For those employees who have not previously participated, set times have been established each week for them to walk. Once employees are registered, they may participate in a 1mile Fit-for-Life Walk to start learning ways to maintain a self-paced fitness program. Also, large groups or organizations may schedule group walks during these or other times, for example during Wingman Call activities. Previously, up to one hour of duty time was provided for one-time participation as mission requirements allowed. AVhile that is still the case, employees are encouraged to become physically active, set goals and track their progress for the purpose of being healthy and fit. Civilian Fitness Program participants may use up to three hours of duty time per week for fitness activities. The program includes 10,000 Steps a Day, 100 hours of Cardio, and 300-500 hours of Cardio. Participants receive a registration packet that includes a pedometer, a "Fit for Life" pamphlet and a flyer that outlines the "Healthy Focus For You" website. They also received a log sheet to keep track of their hours of cardiovascular exercise or number of steps Gate-to-gate results MEN WOMEN Name Time Name Time Mark Elertsen 1:12.00 Kristie Dingman 1:28.08 John Wojciechowski.... 1:25,50 Beverly Banker 1:30.27 Brian Flinders 1:28.59 Suzanne Turley 1:32.03 they walk or miles, depending on the program they choose to participate in. These programs can be accomplished at either the Hess Fitness Center or the Westside Fitness Center. According to Chief Master Sgt. Jewel Lynch, superintendent of the Hess Fitness Center, the programs are self paced and very easy to use. "The log book for each program is located in the lobby of the Hess Fitness Center," she said. "The most importantthing to remember is to log in results at least once a week. Any member of the fitness center staff can help people get started." She also said that any of the walking programs can be accomplished off duty and getting family involved can be very motivating. "Success in any type of fitness goal is easier with the support of family members," she said. "Ask family members to take a walk with you in the evening when the temperatures are cooler. Take the time to look at neighbors' yards to get ideas for your own, use the time to reconnect with a spouse and the kids. It won't feel like exercising and the benefits will be more than just physical." All AFMC employees must register on-line at https:// hillnet.hill.af.mil/policl/CivFitness or access the link from the HAFB Home Page. Tools such as a pedometer and fitness brochure, will be provided to new individual participants who also register for a steps or cardio program, as described at the registration link while supplies last. Fitness time under this program must be scheduled with individual supervisors and must be accurately documented in the timekeeping system for appropriate program assessment and planning.
