Show two miners were killed calvin mcfate and jacob hodge the victims of a horrible mine accident the accident at the iron king mine last saturday morning which result ed in the death of calvin mcfate and jacob tacob hodge was mas undoubtedly one of the worst in the history of tintic gintic district the fhe two 5 3 oung men who ft ere halt half brothers were instantly killed and their bodies horribly a er uti by an explosion of about thirty sticks of dynamite they were at work upon the night shift and their bodies were found at 8 0 clock the follow ruing As near as can be learned the two men had just commenced loading their round of holes in the face of the tan tun nel N which is in a distance of about feet wl when en a charge of powder in one of the holes exploded the explosion of this charge of powder caused the explosion of the entire supply of dynamite which 0 h the h two men had carried into the tunnel amounting in all to about thirty sticks the miners generally use a small piece of wood in tamping and priming the powder and sometimes a steel scraper is em p oyed for the same purpose but not often however as the steel is more liable to cause an explosion when it comes in contact with the powder and caps the scraper which mcfate aid ad hodge were using was found in tie t ie face of the tunnel in a badly t aisted condition and may have been used instead of the regular tamping stick however the explosion might have happened from other causes the round of holes are loaded and fired just before the shift s work is finished and the accident happened at 2 33 0 clock as the watches used by mcfate and hodge were stopped at that hour it was about six hours later when john shea entered the tunnel and found the mutilated bodies shea and mcfate had but recently taken a contract for a couple of hundred feet of work in the tunnel and the two were upon opposite shifts the bodies w mere ere brought to eureka at noon on saturday and taken to tl e undertaking rooms of james eunice I 1 rahe he double funeral was held at the opera house on monday afternoon and was largely attended bev rev al I 1 son delivered the eulogy and the members of the eagles attended in a body interment took place at the c ty cemetery ce meter jacob hodge was 33 years of age and leaves a young wife whom he married a little over oner a year ago while his half brother calvin mcfate was 28 years of age and unmarried the mother of the unfortunate young men their sisters and brothers the wife of mr hodge and other relatives and friends have the sympathy of the entire community jacob hodge and calvin mcfate were well known here where they have made their home for years and a sad feature in connection with their death is that they were the head and support of two families in one case a wife and the other a mother and sisters |
