Show caught in hay press ben thayer had a harrowing ex peri ence at his ranch about six miles to the south of goshen last frida friday mr thayer was operating a hay press or baler and in forcing the hay bay down into the machine his right foot was caught by the plunger mr thayer succeeded in stopping the team which was operating the baler and this pre v anted his foot from being cut entire ly off but the limb was drawn into the mach ne in such a manner that it was horribly bruised and wrenched and one of the small bones above the ankle was also broken mr thayer was alone upon the ranch when the accident occurred and after stopping the team he found it impossible to remove hia his leg from the baler after hours of work he succeeded in securing a hammer and chisel these tools were a short distance from the baler and thayer fixed up a wire rake and managed to pull them in close enough so that he could get his hands upon them then in the darkness because it was dark by that time thayer began cutting the bolts which held the parts of the baler to gether realizing that this was m as the one v may ay in which he could free himself it m as nearly midnight before thayer released himself and securing a horse came to eureka to have his injured foot dressed it required nearly fit teen hours work for mr thayer to free himself and had the horses amov ed during that time his leg would have been crushed in such a manner that amputation would have been feces sara sar dr howell attended mr thayer who is now at his home in this city |
