Show republicans and socialists in i n city council are still at loggerheads Logger heads mayor mitchells appointments were turned down report that socialists will contest mr bowens appointment to the council without doubt the largest crowd of spectators that has ever attended a council meeting in eureka was pres ent last friday night when mayor an drew mitchell called the city council to order As soon as the city officers learned that a large number of visitors were going to attend the meeting arrange ments were made to hold the session in the big council chamber instead of in the recorder recorders s office as has been the custom in the past the roll call showed all the mem bers of the council present af after ter reading the minutes of the previous session a communication was read from several citizens who desired a street light placed in the street back of the residence of william dennis in the southeastern part of town As no committees had been appointed by the mayor this communication was filed to be taken up later by the proper committee A communication was then read from N ferrando regarding the suit which was instituted against him by the city some time ago mr ferran do gave an outline of his side of the case and offered to compromise up on motion of councilman bowen the matter was laid on the table coun oilman Freek freckleton leton then brought up the matter of the appointment of a night policeman which had been laid over from the last meeting his ills mo me tion that J wesley morton be ap pointed to the position was seconded by councilman nelson but when it syl came to a vote the three republican councilmen voted negatively and con f the appointment was not confirmed exactly the same thing happened when the mayor submitted f the following appointments D J I 1 russell for 0 E berry for city attorney dr J A hensel for city physician and A N wallace for elta dt sexton the two socialists voted tor for and the three republicans voted against each of the above ap point ments councilman freckleton then asked that the city recorder read the mm min utes of the two special meetings held by the old city council this was not favored by the republicans mr bowen explaining that the minutes had been read and approved at the last meeting and that it would only be imposing upon the recorder to have them read again he explained how ever that the minute book was open for public inspection at any time the minutes were not read mayor mitchell then submitted his committee appointments which are as follows claims and accounts freckleton bowen tite fire and water zabriskie nelson freckleton sanitary nelson bowen tite streets alleys and bridges nelson bowen freckleton eton licenses freckleton zabriskie nelson city property bowen zabriskie nelson finance and auditing nelson za brickle bowen laws freckleton eton tite nelson after the appointment of these corn the tho committee ommittee upon claims claim a and accounts approved of bills against the city and miss mooney the recorder was instructed to draw warrants for the various amounts after transacting some other rou ine t ne business the council until friday night february ath there is a report in circulation the effect that the socialists are pre paring to contest the appointment elijah bowen 0 o the city concil mr bowen bow en was appointed by the old be re publican council to fill an term he was appointed by stack and unanimously confirmed by the other four councilmen the socialists so maintain that according to the statutes the appointment should have come from a member of the council and not from the mayor |
