Show W 11 1 11 shortly after the last election when it became known that the taxpayers of thia this city had voted in favor of a special tax for library and gymnasium purposes mayor james D stack wrote to ascertain whether or not andrew carnegie would assist in the establish ing of a free public library in cureka mayor stack received a reply to this letter the other day and the answer was in every way favorable mr carnegie informs mr stack that it if eureka city will furnish a suitable q te he will cause to be erected a ill 10 public library in this city the only other condition is that the city council pass a resolution agree ing to maintain the library at a cost of not less than 1000 per year e cannot be any objection to the pass age of such a resolution as the special tas tax in f fa or of w aich the taxpayers I 1 a ae e already voted v bring in more than enough money to keep up the library after it had once been furnished and equipped of course there would be the question of furnish ing and eq equipping nipping the building but the city officers are of the opinion that the money could be easily raised some of the mining companies and men who have made their money from tintic gintic interests have at various times in the past expressed a willing ness to help out on such sueh a proposition and now it appears that there is ab sol no reason why the city can not have a library and gymnasium builds g we understand that at the meeting of the city council tonight the resola tion pledging the city to expend the sum of 1000 a year in maintaining the library will be taken up and there is every reason to believe that it will receive the unanimous support of that body if the resolution passes then no time will be lost in selecting a site upon which vr r oar car neg e w will ill erect a 10 building |
