Show FIVE 1111 mm of he how the cans stand regard ing trusts ant on rail road rates tar ff on and currency chicago the five most important blanks of the republican platform formulated by president roosevelt bud wid secretary taft and drafted by M ade II H ellis attorney general of ohio are here given they are the planks on trusts anti antl injunction rail irad rates tariff revision and cur rency the trust plank the republican party passed the 1 herman antitrust anti trust law over demo batic opposition and enforced it after democratic dereliction it has been a wholesome instrument for good in tl the tle e hands of a wise and tearless fearless ad ministration but experience has shown hown that its effectiveness can be strengthened and its real objects bet ter attained by such amendments as will give the federal government greater supervision and control over and secure greater publicity in the management of that class of inter state corporations having power and opportunity to effect monopolies and at the same time will not interfere with the existing associations among Ilu business siness men farmers and wage earn cs so long as their conduct or opera tion ion results in a positive benefit to the public anti on the anti injunction plank of the platform as passed upon in washing ton is as follows we declare for such an amend ment of the statutes of procedure in the federal courts with respect to the t ise se of the writ of injunction as will on oil the one hand prevent the sum i ary issue of such orders without proper consideration and on the other will preserve undiminished the power of the courts to enforce their process to the end that justice may be done at all times and to all par ties As to ra inroads the exact text of the plank ot of the republican platform prepared by wade H ellis and approved by pres ident roosevelt and secretary tatt taft relating to railroads is as follows we approve the enactment of a railroad rate law and the vigorous en fr cr cement by the present tia tion of the statutes against rebates and discrimination I 1 nation as a result of which the advantages formerly pos messed essed by the large shipper over the small shipper has substantially digap reared leared in this connection we becom mend the appropriation of by the present congress in order to en able the interstate commerce pom mission to thoroughly investigate and give publicity to the accounts ol 01 railroads we believe however that the in ter state commerce law should be fur ther amended so as to give railroads the right to make and sh traffic agreements subject to the approval of tre tie commission but maintaining al ways the principle of competition be tween naturally competing lines and aN avoiding the common control of such I 1 nes by any means whatsoever and we especially favor the enactment of s ich legislate leg islat on as will provide for federal restriction against the over iosue of stocks and bonds by inter state carriers the tar barff ff the republican party declares un equivocally for a revision of the tar iff bv a special session of congreso con gresi immediately the inauguration ot of the next president and commends tho the steps already taken to this end as to work assigned to the appropriate corn com of the two houses which aro are r row ow investigating the operation and effect of existing schedules in all t legislation the true principle of protection Is best maintained by the imposition of such duties as will equal the difference between the cost of production pio at home and abroad to gether with a reasonable profit to american industries and the benefits that follow are best secured by the establishment of maximum and mini mum rates which shall be applied aut somatically cally to the trade of other coun tries in accordance with their treat ment of our trade the minimum represent the normal measure ol 01 protection required for the benefit of our own industries the aim and purpose of the republican policy is not only to presence without erces sive duties that security against for e agn competition to which american n manufacturers farmers and producer producers are entitled but also to maintain the high standard of living of the wage earners of this his country who are the n ost direct beneficiaries of the pro system between the united states and the philippines we favor a free interchange of prod lets with tuch quell limitations as to sugar and to bacco as will aigid injury to domestic interests the currency plank the republican party approves 11 e aldrich vreeland ci arency bill but only as an emergency measure ane e declare tor for a thorough and new estem si stem of currency laws that will tie be in accord with the need of the times and which will be more adaptable to the demands of bus ness and more elastic in its character as a cir culat ir IT 9 medium |
