Show The OGDEN September 15, 2003 VALLEY NEWS Your Community Newspaper Bureau of Reclamation Update On August 11, Representatives from the Bureau of Reclamation and a grouping of citizens organized by Shanna Francis met in the Weber County Commission’s conference room to discuss issues related to Pineview Dam. The meeting was also attended by Weber County Commissioner Glen Burton. The primary views and divergent issues discussed involved the construction of a retaining wall used as part of the support for a berm and the current Safety of Dams upgrade, the accumulation of trash at the spillway inlet gate, consideration of foot and horse trails, and funding for road improvements, i.e., the possible raising of the road bed across the dam, funding for the possible construction of a bridge upstream of the existing road, and the closing of the current road. Commissioner Burton discussed the difficulty of obtaining funding for the road projects since the road is in a type of “funding no-man’s land.” This means, the road is neither rural nor metropolitan, being outside of state (UDOT) funding authority, and outside of federal (Reclamation) funding authority. As Commissioner Burton promised to seek funding for the above proposals, he also negotiated a promise from Reclamation to prepare a memorandum of agreement between the Reclamation and UDOT representatives and attending citizens to discuss the issue further in hopes of finding a conciliatory solution. Reclamation indicated that, because of safety concerns, construction of the wall, or other work at the dam site would probably not be delayed in the interim. AUGUST 20 MEETING AND TOUR Tari Moore of the Weber County Commissioner’s office organized a tour of the Pineview Dam construction site. Invitations were extended to Utah’s congressional delegation, UDOT, the U.S. Forest Service, Weber County Pathways, Save Our Canyons, Weber Basin Water Conservancy District, Ogden River Water Users Association, and the group of Eden residents who oppose the concrete wall. Commissioner Burton again stated the difficulty in obtaining a clear path for funding to make the changes for safe access over the road that crosses the dam. After a preliminary meeting and introductions, invitees moved to the construction site where Bruce Barrett, Area Manager of the Bureau of Reclamation’s Provo Area Office, answered questions of interested parties. Representatives from the StandardExaminer and The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS were also present. According to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), one in every eight adults has been affected by identify theft. A survey by the FTC also shows that about 3.3 million victims had new accounts opened illegally in their names during the last year. Officials from the FTC state that identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal information such as your name, Social Security number, credit card number, or other identifying information, without your permission to commit fraud or other crimes. Identity theft is a serious crime. People whose identities have been stolen can spend months or years—and their hard-earned money—cleaning up the mess thieves have made of their good name and credit record. In the meantime, victims may lose job opportunities, be refused loans, education, housing or cars, or even get arrested for crimes they didn’t commit. Identity theft is used as a means of gaining access to your financial accounts and good credit. Fortunately, there are ways in which you can protect yourself: Carry less information Only carry around with you in your purse or wallet, the minimal amount of identification information and credit cards that you need, thus minimizing the amount of information a thief can steal. With this mind, also realize that a stolen wallet or purse are not the only way a thief steals your identify.
