The joint effort between UDOT and Weber County to improve the 5-mile stretch of roadway traversing North Ogden Canyon will address several safety concerns. The project will include the installation of retaining walls, barriers, and guardrails where needed; and road widening, curve re-alignment, and signage. UDOT and the Engineer for the project, Washington Group, are finalizing plans and UDOT will accept bids for the work this summer. The anticipated construction schedule is as follows: At the earliest, construction will begin this fall. At that time, the road may be closed to traffic. The road will reopen during the “winter construction shut down” in December. The road will close again at the end of the “winter construction shut down” period, March 1, 2004, when construction will resume. The construction will be completed by the fall of 2004. Construction activities at Pineview Dam and on the North Ogden Divide may overlap. The Contractor who wins this job will coordinate construction activities with the work being done at the dam to minimize traffic inconveniences. Weber High Suffers Minimal Fire Damage By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News From left to right, Rachel Wright, Jenny Joram, and Des Loud celebrate after graduating from Weber High on June 3. The graduation ceremony was held at the Dee Event Center in Ogden. Weber High – No ordinary school . . . no ordinary students By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News The first thing you see hanging from the ceiling when you walk into the Weber High commons area is a large poster with a quote from former Weber High teacher Tom Moore, “Weber High is no ordinary school.” On June 3, 2003, 563 students from Weber High School graduated. During the commencement ceremony held at the Dee Event Center, Principal Carl Bruce shared with the audience a number of Weber High achievements awarded to the class of 2003, proving once again that, truly, Weber High is no ordinary school. Throughout the past school year, students not only heard, but lived the Warrior theme for the year, “I will not follow where the path may lead, but I will go where there is no path, and I will leave a trail.” In many areas, students blazed into new territory, setting new records in academics, athletics, and in extra curricular activities. A few of these achievements by Weber High School (WHS) students are listed below: 108 students were listed on the honor roll, 12 out of 12 quarters during their three years at Weber. WEBER HIGH cont. on page 13 Studies at Weber High are periodically interrupted to practice emergency and fire drill evacuations. But on May 28, around 1:00 p.m., students weren’t returned to their classrooms after the fire alarm sounded but, instead, were sent home after a fire erupted in a mechanical room near the math area on the west side of the building. The fire broke out after the float device on the school’s swamp cooler malfunctioned. Excessive water overflowed, running down the wall to an electrical outlet. Sparks ignited cardboard stored in the area. According to Pleasant View detective Anderson, “The smoke alarms and sprinkler system worked effectively. Three fire engines were called in from Weber County, Ogden City, and Harrisville’s North View Fire Department. It was at least two hours before anyone could go back into the building.” No injuries were reported, and school resumed the following day. Weber School District spokesperson Nate Taggart stated, “We’re thankful for the fire departments that responded rapidly, and glad the situation wasn’t any worse.” Damage was categorized as minimal. Students evacuated from the school report either to the soccer field or tennis courts, based on what letter of the alphabet their last name begins with. Appointed teachers then take roll to account for students. A central command center is also quickly established. Taggart concluded, “In this case, the system worked very well.” Probasco’s Swap Meet and Show Incorporation Milestone Reached By Steve Clarke Feasibility Steering Committee Chairman The long awaited preliminary Feasibility of Incorporation study by Weber County has been received by the groups steering committee. The study provided useful data on revenues that might be expected within the new city boundaries, and on potential costs. The data showed a significant deficit using the originally submitted boundaries, which included Heritage Knolls, Radford Hills, Ogden Canyon, and the area generally known as Eden proper. Initial reports indicate that in order to make incorporation economically feasible, a considerably smaller boundary will need to be established. The Boundary Committee is drawing up the new boundary, and a study team will calculate the impact the changes will have on the balance sheet. As soon as these teams complete their work, a public meeting will be held to present the results and, potentially, to launch a petition drive requesting a formal Feasibility of Incorporation study by an independent firm. The preliminary data and underlying assumptions from the results of this data, were reviewed during a meeting with Weber County Commissioner Glen Burton and several key county department representatives. The Steering Committee would like to express their appreciation for the open dialogue on public safety and road maintenance costs. Roger Brunker led the Pre-Feasibility Study. NOTICE: Ogden Valley residents, please, pull the Dyer’s Woad before it goes to seed. Harold Probasco and his sons held their annual Swap Meet and Show featuring old machinery, tractors, and more on May 30 and 31st. Letters to the Editor . . . . . . . . .
