Motorists Urged to Slow Down and Use Caution Compiled by Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Motorists are being cautioned to drive safely and to slow down as the summer season approaches. A number of accidents have been reported on the North Ogden Divide. Earlier this year, Haley Spainhower of Eden was involved in a one-car accident on the Divide. Citing speed as a factor, Haley braked and slid on the newly sanded roads. After overcorrecting, her vehicle careened into the mountain and became airborne three times before finally landing less than three feet from the edge where the precipice drops hundreds of feet. The impact of her car hitting the asphalt caused the vehicle to ignite. Stunned and disoriented, Haley sat for a few moments, unaware of the danger she was in. Other youth traveling over the divide on their way to go snowboarding saw the car and stopped to help. Not knowing if anyone was inside or not, they soon saw movement from Haley and quickly helped her from the burning vehicle, which rapidly became engulfed in intense flames. A large blackened area on the asphalt can still be seen on the North Ogden side of the divide, directly before entering the cement barriered narrows on the way up. On May 6, a Toyota Tacoma pick-up truck rolled off over the edge of the North Ogden Divide on the Liberty side after the driver left the vehicle and failed to put the standard transmission in gear and apply the emergency brake. The truck tumbled 950 feet down the embankment before coming to rest. The truck was totaled. An Eden man was taken by helicopter to an area hospital on May 12 after going over the edge on the North Ogden side of the mountain road while riding a motorcycle. The 44-year-old lost control of his Honda Shadow after swerving to miss a squirrel. The bike came to a stop after hitting the guardrail, while the cyclist continued airborne over and down the cliff about 60 yards. The mountain road was closed for nearly two hours as rescue crews worked to bring the man out of the canyon where he landed on a rock bed. After an effort to rescue the man using ropes and winches failed, LifeFlight was able to retrieve the victim using a built-in hoist. The accident occurred around 6:30 p.m. The victim has been recovering in a local hospital after suffering a broken leg and multiple lacerations.
