Invitation for Articles Thank You Little Kingfisher I must admit two things; I whined the loudest, along with many of my friends, about the detour around Pineview this fall. But, I will miss this drive. I made a little friend, and noticed many beautiful sights driving this detour that I would have otherwise missed. Every morning and evening I looked forward to seeing my little Kingfisher perched on the power lines overlooking a pond along the highway. He was basking in the morning sunshine coming up over the mountains to the east, and catching the last rays of light on his back as the sun set down the canyon to the west. Sometimes I would not be fortunate enough to see him, but regardless, he brought a smile to my face just thinking about him. His messy “bedhead” plumage always made me laugh, and I miss him even now that he has migrated to a warmer climate. When he returns in the spring, I may make that drive again, just to see him every once in a while. The drive over the North Ogden Divide has always inspired me. The view of our valley from near the top has to be one of the most beautiful, breathtaking views I have ever seen. I forgot how much I loved this drive, and was glad that I decided to take this route when venturing to the northern part of Ogden. Even with its steep incline and sharp curves, if you took your time to enjoy the drive, it was worth it. The drive over Trappers Loop will continue to be an alternative route, even when the spillway work is finished. During the fall, the contrasting colored foliage and pine silhouettes are second to none in beauty and tranquility. Again, the view of our valley as you crest the hills is awe-inspiring. Delays Cause Hardships I am a resident of Eden/Liberty. In regard to the numerous news articles and letters to the editor in the StandardExaminer and the OGDEN VALLEY NEWS, I would like to voice my feelings of frustration and anger concerning the delays I am amazed that this project did not include a penalty clause that is invariably included in private industry contracts. Where are our tax dollars going? Hopefully I represent the sentiment in Ogden Valley. We are tired of the delays and the lack of sensitivity to this problem. Robert B. Bachtel, Nordic Valley Big Mountain Pass Closed for Winter The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises motorists that State Road 65—Big Mountain Pass through East Canyon, from milepost 2.5 in Salt Lake County to milepost 12.8 in Morgan County, is now closed. Angela Swaner, A very grateful Eden resident on the Pineview Dam project. As residents, we are suffering significant inconveniences, including increased fuel costs, valuable time commuting to and from places of employment, increased costs of services because of added delivery distance, and a serious impact on tourism in Ogden Valley. We are told that the reasons for the delays are uncontrollable and unanticipated, and that the contractor is working 24 hours a day to complete the project. However, I drive by the project almost every day and night, and highly doubt that there is any sense of urgency. Whether there is a problem with the contractor of the Bureau of the Reclamation, it is creating an inconvenience to the residents, and an economic hardship on local businesses. In recent months I have read several articles about the problems faced by certain government agencies, and their inability to deal with “real, concrete” issues, and completion of various endeavors. The Forest Service has been accused of, and has admitted, that they are in “analysis paralysis.” Let’s hope that the Bureau of Reclamation is not experiencing the same problem. But for the detour, I would have never appreciated the differing perspectives of our hillsides to the west of Pineview— they are spectacular from a distance. Too many people, me included at times, only saw this detour as an inconvenience and an extra 15 minutes that we could have spent elsewhere. The wear and tear on our vehicles, and cost in fuel was another down-side. However, we made the decision to live on the outskirts of the city, and regardless of the route, it is a timely drive. On the other had, just picture yourselves driving to Ogden from Layton, Bountiful, or Salt Lake during the freeway construction. What a beautiful view you would have during that delay! At least we were constantly moving. Try to appreciate the positive side of the spillway construction instead of always focusing on the negative. The construction needed to be done for safety purposes, and the timing is never convenient. We have had a mild fall-winter transition, and except for the tragic accidents—that could have occurred either way--this too shall pass. We will go back to our old habits of mindlessly driving to and from Ogden, not stopping to appreciate the beauty that we are so lucky to be surrounded by. Just take a minute— enjoy it. Signs are posted to notify the traveling public. Heavy snowfall on this road exceeds the Department’s capacity to clear and maintain it for travel during winter months. The road will re-open next spring as weather conditions permit. Cynics do not contribute. Skeptics do not create. Doubters do not achieve. — Author Unknown Deadline for material for the January 15 OVN issue is January 8. Well done . . .
