We invite residents to send their announcements to: “To reduce hazards for vehicles, and provide road, vegetation, and soil protection, motorized travel on the Avon/Liberty Road, County Road 165, will be gated and signed as closed to motorized use until further notice,” announced Ogden District Ranger Chip Sibbernsen of the U.S. Forest Service. Recent 4-wheel drive activity has damaged springs, watercourses, ponds, and the road surface. The National Forest System Lands described in this closure is located in Cache County, approximately 35 miles northeast of Ogden, Utah. Many areas of the Ogden Ranger District contain fragile soils and vegetation, and are susceptible to soil damage and erosion from offhighway vehicle use. Motorized travel is allowed only on designated routes, and cross-country travel is not permitted anywhere on the District. Damage occurs when off-road vehicle users go off the developed road—creating their own roads, or drive on the road when it is wet. In the process, there is considerable damage being done to the roadway that is very expensive to repair. Drivers also become stranded at all times of the day and night. The following are exempt from this closure: The OGDEN VALLEY NEWS PO BOX 130 EDEN UT 84310 1. Persons with a permit specifically exempting them from the effect of this order. The road will reopen next spring once conditions dry out, and the damage is repaired,” said Sibbernsen. Letters to the Editor Balloon Fest Organizers Say Thanks The Eden Balloon & Arts Festival organizing committee would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the wonderful volunteers who helped make The Wild, Wild, West Balloon Festival a reality. Plans for next year’s festival “Crusin’ With The Oldies” are in full swing. We would like to invite anyone interested in volunteering or chairing a committee, (such as Advertising, Sponsors, Coke Wagons etc.) to contact Linda Gillespie at 745-6807. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget! Eden Balloon & Arts Festival Organizing Committee Dam Project Poorly Planned I am writing this letter because I am concerned for the safety of any citizen living in, and/or traveling to and from Ogden Valley. I also have a secondary concern regarding the cost and inconvenience caused by the delay in completing the work on the dam, which is keeping the highway closed. The safety hazards are obvious, and include: shift down into a lower gear to save their brakes). 2. The rapid onset of winter weather, especially on the higher altitude alter nate routes (Trappers Loop Road and the North Ogden Divide). 3. The tendency for some drivers to take risks, i.e. speeding or improper passing to make up time lost due to the extra 10 - 15 miles traveled because of the road closure. A very conservative example of the cost mentioned above for a family commuting to and from Ogden Valley is as follows: Ten extra miles driven twice daily by a two vehicle family, five days a week, at $0.32 per mile, equals $64.00 per week. It has been reported that the work will take “at least” one additional month to complete, which should cost commuting residents at least $256 each in additional costs. This cost estimate does not include additional travel to the Valley for work, commerce, or to visit. I feel the dam project was poorly planned. For example, the late starting date, and non-anticipation of problems associated with locating the reinforcement bars. I also feel that those supervising this project lack a sense of urgency to complete it. I am not in the business of “earthquake proofing” a dam so I can’t make suggestions on how to speed things up, but I can recommend to whoever is in charge, to do some quick problem solving and get this thing completed. 1. Increased travel over the North Ogden Divide by drivers who may have never used this road. Evidence of this is the increase in the number of accidents on this alternate route. I personally smell brakes burning several times a week as I travel over the divide, further proving Buzz Nietert, that mountain terrain is a hazard to Eden inexperienced drivers (Drivers should The Ogden Valley Translator/Recreation Special Service District will be holding its annual budget meeting for 2003 on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at the Ogden Valley Library at 7:00 p.m. All Valley residents are invited to attend. 2580 N.
