Stitt of Huntsville, was recently selected to be the Valedictorian of the 2002 graduating class of Weber High School, which consists of approximately 550 students. Ben Rippon of North Ogden was selected as the Salutatorian. Stitt achieved the honor by maintaining a 4.0 grade point average throughout his high school years. He also completed eleven Advanced Placement classes, and numerous College Preparation and Honors classes. In addition, he tested well on the ACT and SAT exams. All of the above were weighted in the decision for valedictorian. Stitt commented, “ I didn’t really start out thinking I would become the high school valedictorian. I just chose difficult classes to challenge me, and to give me college credit. I kept a 4.0 so I could get a good scholarship. And I just happened to test pretty well. In the end, it all added up.” Stitt’s strategy for getting college credit and a scholarship has worked. He will attend the University of Utah Honors Program this fall on a Presidential Scholarship, which pays for four years tuition and fees. However, the scholarship will cover more than his undergraduate degree— passing his Advanced Placement tests should allow him to start as a secondsemester sophomore. Stitt’s plans include going on a mission for the L.D.S. church after his first semester, graduating from the University of Utah, earning his MBA, then starting his own business. Stitt is also a National Merit Scholar, which earned him a $2,500 scholarship. Changing Faces at Valley Schools On May 29, Valley residents paid tribute to six teachers from Valley Elementary who retired at the end of the school year—Cary Davis, Pat Fuller, Dave Garner, Monty Hawks, Carol Pilcher, and Jane McVaugh. An open house was hosted in their honor at the Ogden Valley branch library in Huntsville. Also in attendance was Valley Elementary principal Brad Larsen, who is being transferred from Valley Michael Wooden Kyler Stitt Only 8,000 high school seniors throughout the United States receive this honor each year. Stitt says, “You have to do well on the PSAT test that you take as a junior. Everything starts there.” In the spring of his junior year, Stitt was notified that his PSAT test score qualified him to move forward in the scholarship competition. He then received notice that he was a semi-finalist, and after evaluation of his essay and application, a finalist. This spring Stitt was named a National Merit Scholar. He is the only student from Weber High to receive the honor this year. But high school hasn’t been all work and no play for Stitt. He managed to run cross country for three years, lettering twice in the sport, and receiving the Academic All-State award in Cross Country—given to only ten senior boys and ten senior girls in the 5-Acategory. He lettered in track this spring, and again garnered the coveted Academic All-State for Track and Field. He also lettered in Math and Computer Science, attending competitions in both fields. He has been an officer in both the Key and Spanish clubs. Stitt is also an Eagle Scout, with three palms. Stitt sums up his feelings about his high school years and achievements, “Weber has some great A.P. teachers who made learning fun. I liked the challenge of those classes, so I know I will like college. High school was fun, but I’m excited to get on with my education. My advice to other kids, ‘If you think you can handle it, take more A.P. classes than your counselor might recommend.’ They’re tough, but don’t underestimate yourself.” Celeste C.
