The Look of the Games will include large-scale banners mounted on about a dozen high-rise buildings in the city’s skyline, processional banners hung along city streets, plus a “wayfinding” system with pylons listing directional information. In addition, buses for the media and athletes will be wrapped in photos of Olympic athletes in action. “The vision for the Games is to celebrate the contrast of the land of Utah and the fire of the Olympians,” said Mitt Romney, president and CEO of SLOC. “Through color and image photography, our look elements will create a festive atmosphere in which to celebrate the Games.” As the gateway to the city, the Salt Lake City International Airport will welcome visitors with Olympic photo banners and images that will be visible both inside and outside of the terminals Once in the downtown area, the majority of the Olympic look elements will be placed in the area from 600 South to North Temple and 200 East to 400 West. Additional look elements will enhance Salt Lake Olympic Square, which is an 8-square block in the heart of downtown, which includes the Olympic Medals Plaza. A 100-foot Gateway Tower, with an athlete’s image, will be erected west of the Olympic Medals Plaza on 300 West. In addition, a graphic of SLOC’s crystal as well as athlete images will adorn the glass surface of the Salt Lake Ice Center. Street banners will also be hung along 700 East and Foothill Drive, which are major traffic thoroughfares to and from Interstate 80 leading to Park City, site of three Olympic venues. Each competition venue will be decorated with a variety of look elements including a Gateway Tower, athlete banner clusters, and Olympic marks and banners in the field of play. The look elements will include vibrant colors that communicate the Games’ theme of fire and ice. The fire palette will be represented by colors such as red rock, sunset and sandstone, while the ice palette will be represented by colors such as mountain shadow, turquoise and lake. SLOC’s look elements will be installed at the airport in November 2001 and in the downtown area and venues January through March 2002. Eden Balloon Fest--2001: a balloon odyssey Welcome to the 7th Annual Eden Balloon Fest. The Balloon Fest has become a late summer tradition in Ogden Valley, and is getting bigger and better each year. We would like to extend a special thank you with sincere appreciation to all the volunteers and sponsors, balloonists, and booth vendors that make this event possible. Location: All activities will take place at the EDEN PARK, 2100 N. 5500 E., Eden, Utah in Ogden Valley. The Balloon Fest is sponsored by the Eden Park Service District, with proceeds supporting the maintenance and improvement of the Eden Community Park. Admission: Admission to all events is free. Charges will apply at food and game booths. Parking: Free parking will be provided in designated areas around the Park. Handicap parking will be available, in addition to a fee parking area. Balloon Flights: Come see a wide variety of colorful balloons, from characters to the more traditional. To see the balloons being inflated and launched, it is best to get to the park early in the morning! Early morning provides the calmest and most optimal conditions for flying. The launching will take place between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. Breakfast is available at the park on Saturday and Sunday mornings until 10:00 a.m. Balloon Launches are subject to weather conditions, wind and thunderstorms being the biggest concern. Evening Balloon launches are left to the discretion of the balloonists, and will also be dependent upon weather conditions. Early evening winds often make launching difficult. The balloonists will be competing for cash prizes in events both Saturday and Sunday mornings. On Saturday evening the Balloons will be tethered, and will glow in the night sky. History: In 1995, Eden Park hosted its first Balloon Festival as a fundraiser for park maintenance and improvements. That year they had eight hot air balloons and ten vendors participating. About 1000 people attended the two-day event. By 2000, the event had grown to 26 hot air balloons, and 110 vendor booths, with approximately 30,00 people attending the three-day event. This year the Eden Balloon Fest has adopted the theme, "2001: A Balloon Odyssey." With balloon launches, fireworks, a balloon glow, food, entertainment, car show, fun run, live radio and TV coverage, and over 110 vendor booths and games for kids, this year's event promises to be an more exciting event than ever before. Please join us in making the event a tremendous success. Come out and enjoy the EDEN BALLOON FEST. For more information, call 745-1465. Volunteers are needed for the 7th Annual BalloonFest.
