Even Utah Power has a plan to reward customers who conserve electricity. It surely must be serious. Yet every night when I look out my window there are hundreds of lights burning in Ogden Valley. Most burn all night. Some of these lights may be needed during the evening hours, but I question the need for them at 3:00 a.m. We could reduce our power consumption considerably if these lights were put on timers and turned off after evening hours. Alan Joslyn Eden The Reasonable Approach As the fluoridation controversy continues, we in Weber County have the opportunity to do the right thing for all citizens, while reminding our state and local leaders that it’s not legal or moral to vote democratically on civil rights, like the right to choose and refuse medicine (14th amendment interpretation by Supreme Court). Weber residents, at minimum, deserve full and accurate disclosure of all costs, maintenance, legal, and safety issues related to fluoridation far in advance of voting. Recently the Salt Lake Tribune chastised Davis and Salt Lake County leaders for insisting they had a firm handle on vital questions and then later revealing gross misrepresentations which influenced public voting. Apparently the pro-fluoridation juggernaut distracts the public wrath by insulting and invalidating purerwater activists against fluoridation. Questions of cost, safety, maintenance, and arsenic contamination are swept under the rug, and the only visible answer to date is insulting whoever asked the question. This should give anyone pause, whether you like fluoride or not. After all a good idea would sell itself, and wouldn’t require hundreds of thousands of tax dollars to squelch those who simply want to exercise basic God-given and civil rights. I urge all Weber County residents to insist upon only clean, pharmaceuticalgrade fluoride tablets and rinses, and to only allow voting as a means of approving funding for easy distribution of these direct-contact type dosages to those who want it. A vote that determines we all pay for fluoride through tax-dollars is legal. A vote that insists we all must swallow fluoride is not legal or morally acceptable. This is our opportunity to cease and desist oppressive and forcible bullying tactics, and provide only the best quality fluoridation options, at a fraction of the cost to all those who truly want it. Rachael Sweeten Bright Day Health Foods Ogden Thanks to the Community Thank you so much for your response to our article in the May 15 issue of the OGDEN VALLEY NEWS. Each summer we have a group of girls from Seitoku High School in Tokyo, Japan visit our community from July 19 through August 8. The wonderful people in the Valley have welcomed these students into their hearts and homes. These girls have had such a valuable experience while here. This year we will again have several families in the Valley that will have girls with them. However, we are still in need of a few more. The girls have school and activities during the day, and we just need host families to provide a family environment during their stay. Please consider this opportunity to learn more about another culture while helping one of these students. Feel free to contact me with any questions, or for more information at 393-1048. Thanks again for sharing your beautiful part of the world with these students. Lorrie Frazier Ogden, Utah Inspirational Thought New Members Selected for Liberty Park Special Service Area Board Weber County Commissioners recently appointed five new members to serve on the Liberty Park Special Service Area Board until elections for members can be held in November. The expiration of terms of previous board members precipitated the appointments. New board members include local residents Vern Beddes, Kent Boyington, Mitch Holmes, Mike Rhees, and Lynn Visser, with Rhees having served on the board for the past five years. NOTICE to HOME OWNERS If you have an electric water heater, you could put a timer on it. This would save you money by having the water heater turn on only at peak times. If there are not great values behind great victories, the victories are pointless. — Greg Scrosso The deadline for material for the July 1st issue is June 20th, 2001. 627-5953 Look for a new notice next issue!
