Show Volume III, Issue X THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 15 March 15, 2001 CASA DEL RIO cont. from page 14 ing to sell the canyon home to us for $3,000, but money was tight and we were not able to purchase it. At the time the house was built, it did not have central heating; however, there was a fireplace in the living room. We lived in the house in the spring, summer and fall for two years. About 1936, my brothers installed a brand new furnace that they had converted to burn heating oil. It was located about the center of the basement with a thermostat installed upstairs. At the southwest corner of the basement, a large oval tank for heating oil was set on legs and a pipe ran from this tank outside and to within a few feet of the highway where fuel oil was delivered by truck when needed. We felt this was the most perfect type of heating anyone could have. Vern and I both worked each day in Ogden and when we came home the house was always comfortable. Vern and I were thrilled to be living in a beautiful, new home in Ogden Canyon. So, on our first wedding anniversary, we celebrated the occasion by an open house in the early evening in the canyon home. A good number of friends and relatives attended. Some who came were my Aunt Ida Farley Ferrin and her husband Chariton; Dick Frasier, our canyon neighbors; Richard and Murial Cropper Bush; and the Mohlman girls. We often invited to our canyon home, our friends that we made in the Ogden 18th LDS Ward—Vera and Leslie Christensen, Edna and Rudger Dent, Bishop Grant and Bea Lofgreen, and Stencia and Lee Newman. The first baby to attend was Vera and Les’s baby Carol. She would sleep peacefully in her bassinet in the bedroom while we were laughing and visiting in the living room. We lived at 311 Ogden Canyon from June 1934 to November 1942 when my husband auditioned for and was accepted into the U.S. Navy Band during World War II. I was expecting my first child and so moved to my parents’ home. My brother then sold the canyon home. Postscript Madeleine Marriott Harrop was born October 23, 1909 in Ogden, and passed away December 2, 1997. As a young girl, Madeleine, her sister Ida, and older brothers Horace, Orion, and Milton enjoyed their time in Ogden Canyon at their parents’ summer home at 307 Ogden Canyon. That residence was built and owned by Charles Marriott and his wife Mary Farley Marriott. Ida Marriott Kyle is the only surviving member of that family who, at the age of 89, lives in Bakersfield, California. Madeleine recalled living at 311 Ogden Canyon on one occasion, when looking outside the house, she could see reflections on the mountains and in the sky from the flames as the Hermitage Hotel burned. Vern recalled many, many times having to shovel extra amounts of snow from in front of the garage at 311 before he could drive his car out, as the snowplows at that time, clearing the canyon highway, would dump their loads in front of the garage as a place to put the snow. The name of 311 Ogden Canyon “Casa Del Rio” was suggested by David Marriott, a half-brother of Charles Marriott. The properties in that neighborhood are numbered 301, 303, 305, 307, 309, and 311 Ogden Canyon Road. Some others who lived in the neighborhood before 1942 included the Lisle Marriott Lauder family, the Ballantyne family, Chariton and Ida Farley Ferrin family, and Mr. Dixon. After 1942, the Samuel and Katherine Thomas Brady family lived at 307, and in the late 1950’s the Hogan family lived at 311.
