Show Page 4 THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Volume III, Issue VI January 15, 2000 Clearing Out - Making Room for the New Year By Janet Hoffmann Well I’ve heard from a few of you saying that you would like to do a better job of recycling, but you feel the same way I do—overwhelmed! So I’m starting slowly. I cleaned a few closets and donated all my extras and “don’t use anymore items” to the Deseret Industries—an easy way for me to start working toward my goal. I start off with the easy “stuff” and work toward the more difficult. Many years ago I read the book Clutter’s Last Stand. The author made fun of how we collect things and then spend all our time taking care of those things. He went on to say that when we get rid of the clutter in our homes it takes a weight off our minds. And even though our clutter is in our house, we also carry it around in our brains wherever we go. I know this to be true, as I’ve seen it happen in my own life. My brain just lost a few pounds. Too bad my body doesn’t lose it that easily. We moved our living room couch up to our daughter’s room to make room for the Christmas tree, and now I want to leave it there. I love the freedom I feel from having more room. I’ll end up moving it back next time we have more guests than can fit on our family room couch. With a family our size, it won’t take long. I love to be able to clean a room with nothing in the way, but living with people stops me from having all empty rooms. Have you ever heard the term “Great Room?” I’ve heard it, but I’m not sure what it really is but to me it is a huge room that is mostly empty so you can use it for “great” things like dancing, bowling, playing games, and anything else that involves a crowd. I love crowds and I need a place for the crowds to gather. A “great room” would do the trick for me. O.K., I’ll stop dreaming and come back to reality. I love to dream. Dreaming can make me feel so good. Even if the dream never comes true, I had fun dreaming about it anyway. So I’ll continue to dream about my “Great Room” but I’ll get back to my point. Getting rid of everything you don’t need does feel great, and when you recycle it you feel even better. I found out that there’s a newspaper recycling bin on the Northeast side of the Eden Park. I’ve been taking my old newspapers all the way to town. So now you know, at least, where to take your newspapers. I haven’t taken any newspapers over there yet because we burn ours. Is burning newspapers considered recycling? We burn them for heat so it seems to me it’s recycling. Taking my excess to the Deseret Industries is definitely recycling so I’ve done my recycling this week. As always let me know your thoughts, and happy recycling. Experience Your America, And Make a Difference in National Parks (NAPS)-With 383 National Parks around the nation, there’s one within driving distance of just about anywhere, even your own back yard. The National Park Foundation, the official nonprofit partner of the National Park Service, has launched the Proud Partners of America’s National Parks campaign to help Americans learn about and connect with National Parks across town and across the country. The Proud Partner campaign is designed to get Americans involved in simple ways that will have a big impact on National Parks. Individual Americans aren’t the only ones becoming Proud Partners: the campaign is being made possible through the support of corporate Proud Partners: American Airlines, Discovery Communications, Inc., Eastman Kodak Company, and Ford Motor Company. Becoming a Proud Partner is easy. In fact, you can do so without ever leaving home, by simply: Telling Your Park Story—Visit www.NationalParks.org and explore a searchable online forum where those who have visited or volunteered in National Parks can share their experiences with other National Park enthusiasts. Purchasing a National Parks Pass—The National Parks Pass allows Pass holders unlimited entrance into National Parks that charge an entrance fee. The Pass can be purchased for $50 and proceeds from the sale of the Pass directly benefit in-park programs. Sharing a Park Picture—Post your favorite National Park picture on the Kodak PhotoQuilt for the National Parks at www.NationalParks.org. Supporting the National Park Foundation—By bringing private support to the public treasures in the National Park System, the Foundation has been able to fund important projects in National Parks ranging from the restoration of the Washington Monument to the study of coral reefs in Virgin Islands National Parks. Referring a Friend—Have a friend who might want to help out? Send them e-mail from www.NationalParks.org telling them how they can get involved. Anyone who becomes a Proud Partner will receive a collectable decal. To become a Proud Partner of America’s National Parks, visit www.NationalParks.org or write to Proud Partners at 1101 17th St., NW; Suite 1102; Washington, D.C. 20036. 801-745-4000 2555 WOLF CREEK DRIVE EDEN, UTAH STORE HOURS: MON. - SAT. 7 AM - 10 PM SUNDAY 7 AM - 9 PM Farr Ice Cream 5qt bucket $3.99 with coupon Limit 1 per purchase Expires 1/31/01 Freschetta Pizzas Save $1.00 with coupon Limit 1 per coupon Expires 1/31/01 Pepsi Products 2 liters $.59 cents with coupon Limit 2 per customer Expires 1/31/01 |
