JESPERSEN. The body of David E. Jespersen, American soldier who died while fighting in the battle of Chateau Thierry, will arrive in Ogden Wednesday over the Union Pacific. David Jespersen was a Huntsville boy and was the son of Jesper and Augusta Maria Anderson Jespersen. He was born in Huntsville, July 30, 1889. At the time of entering service he was in the grocery business with his brother Edward at Huntsville. David E. Jespersen entered the service October 31, 1917. He left Ogden for Camp Lewis November 3 and remained at Camp Lewis until November 11, when he departed for Camp Mills, New York. He remained there until December 6. On December 14, he sailed for Europe on U.S.S. Leviathan, landing at Liverpool December 24 at Camp Morn Winchester, where he received some training until December 30. He then left for France, landing at La Harve January 1, 1918. Here he boarded the train which consisted of boxcars. The weather being very cold and severe, many of the boys froze their feet and later came down with pneumonia. He arrived at Dela Courtine where they made their fist American cemetery. On February 26, he was transferred from the Forty-first division to the Forty-second or the Rainbow division. On March 2, 1918, they boarded the train for Lunville and upon their arrival found the city being bombed by aeroplanes. He then went by way of trucks to the third line trenches on the Lorraine front and on March 14 he took his position at the front-line trench. He remained on this front for 100 days. During this time he endured many hardships. On July 4 he went to the third-line trenches on the Champagne front where the German army was making its last drive for Paris. Here they battled until July 19 when they were relieved from that front and received orders to go to ChateauThierry where they started the drive for Germany. On this drive they took many prisoners and many men had been killed and wounded. As they had started up the Hill 288 near the city of Sergy on the morning of July 28, he met his death. Mr. Jespersen is survived by his father and mother, and the following brothers and sisters: Fred W. Jespersen of Oregon, Edward Jespersen of Huntsville, Henry A.
