Show Volume II, Issue XI THE OGDEN VALLEY NEWS Page 11 1 June 2000 Huntsville Resident Earns Award This year, in preparation for the annual EMS (Emergency Medical Services) Week Awards ceremony, Eric Froerer of Huntsville was nominated for Paramedic of the Year. The nomination was weighed against other nominees received by the EMS Week Awards Committee. The Committee consists of representatives from the Utah Chapter of the American College The Ceremony was held on May 15 in Orem, Utah. Eric has lived in Huntsville most of his life. He started out at a fairly young age learning what hard work was all about. He helped operate his family’s dairy, also milking cows for others here in the Valley. Eric attended Weber State College from 1984 to 1987 receiving his AAS Degree in that it was going to take time and a lot of hard work on his part to return as a paramedic and to be able to function with a hook and a hand. Eric has done so much more than just return as a paramedic. He has served the public in many other capacities. Eric is presently a full time paramedic for the Roy Fire Department. He has worked with the Department for Weber/Morgan Inter-hospital Committee as Paramedic Representative. Eric is also presently working part-time with AirMed, University of Utah Hospital, as a member of an elite team as Flight Paramedic. He has been with AirMed for two years, and in December of 1999, received an award from the University of Utah Hospital as Flight Eric Froerer in front of University of Utah’s AirMed helicopter. of Emergency Physicians, Utah Emergency Nurses Association, Utah Paramedic Association, Utah Association of EMT’s, and the Utah Chapter of the Association of Public Safety Communications Officers. It was the Committee’s decision that Eric was deserving of recognition as Paramedic of the Year. The EMS Week Awards Ceremony is presented annually to honor persons who are exceptional examples in the field of emergency medical services. Eric was chosen to be honored this year at an Awards Ceremony because of his outstanding performance. His efforts have made a difference and have been felt by the community around him. Emergency Care and Rescue and AS Degree in General Education. Eric received his Paramedic Degree on June 10,1987. Eric began his career with Emergency Care at Mountain West Ambulance in Ogden, Utah. Almost one year to the day after he received his Paramedic Degree, Eric was involved in an accident that would change his life forever. On June 13, 1988, Eric lost his left hand in a farming accident. The following three months were very hard, physically and emotionally. But through it all, Eric remained positive and optimistic. Eric never seemed to doubt that he could return to work and continue as a paramedic. He also knew 12 years. Eric has, since then, worked for the Bureau of Emergency Medical Services in Salt Lake City as Practical Test Proctor. His responsibilities include all aspects of organization in providing test sites, teams, and materials for administering Utah State BEMS (Bureau of Emergency Medical Services) EMT-Basic practical tests. Eric has worked for the Department of Public Safety, Weber Communications, as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher. He has served on the Utah BEMS Grants Review Subcommittee as Paramedic Representative. He has served on the Utah BEMS Paramedic Advisory Subcommittee and also the Paramedic of the year. Eric also designed the new paint scheme for the University of Utah’s new, Bell 407 Helicopter. On occasion Eric also helps with teaching and class instruction at Weber State University in the EMT and Paramedic Program. Getting to the top of his profession, despite a frightening and unfortunate accident, Eric has continued to serve with honor and compassion. He displays a modest, calm, and confident demeanor. His involvement in Utah EMS locally and at the State level demonstrates his dedication to the service. Eric is very deserving of The Paramedic of the Year Award.
