Before the snow begins to fly: • Mulch around tender perennials that may struggle this winter if the temperatures are colder than normal. • Cut roses back to a height of 3 to 4 feet so the snow doesn’t break the canes. Major pruning should be done in the spring. • Water deeply all evergreen shrubs and trees to prepare them for winter. • Be certain all sprinkler lines are drained or blown out to prevent damage from freezing. • Remove all critters from plants that spent the summer outdoors, before bringing plants in for the winter. Those hitchhikers can spread to other houseplants. • Consider mulching all roses for extra winter protection. The Broad Side of a Barn • Mow the lawn short before winter to help reduce diseases and other problems next spring. Cutting it at about two inches tall is recommended for the last mowing. • Apply a nitrogen based fertilizer to the lawn right before a late fall storm. Apply it at a rate of ½ pound per 1,000 square feet. This means that about 5 pounds of ammonium sulfate (21-0-0) or 3 pounds of ammonium nitrate (340-0) should be applied to every 1,000 square feet of lawn area. It can be applied as late as mid-November and still help green up the lawn next spring. A bit of trivia: In a recent study of over 800 people between the ages of 25 and 74, those who gardened regularly were 66% less likely to have a cardiac arrest. The farm is called “Cat-dances.” The wish is to provide temporary residence to cats in need. The mural is an invitation. . . “Cat-dances” is the effort of one family to encourage compassion and care to homeless and unwanted cats. “We provide a safe haven, quality feed, veterinary care, and population control. Many animals come to us of their own accord, as lost or feral cats seeking food. Others are brought to us, injured or abandoned. We absorb the cost of this endeavor joyfully and feel that it, like the picture, illustrates a reverence for all life.” It has been noted that cats are the only creatures who enjoy their full liberty. As the domesticator of this extraordinary animal, there is a debt that we, in a small way, must accept as ours. If you have a vacancy in your home for a cat companion, call (801)745-3179. “Cat-dances” places spayed and neutered animals in loving homes, free of cost. The mural began as an afternoon project for a quiet resident with one blank wall, two (underestimated) cans of paint, and a day off. Bee stings, ladder falls, and paint-splattered hair added human interest to this story. Three months and several sunburns later, the cat began to take recognizable form. The mural, in its rough draft, has not yet been completed. The story, like the rescue effort, is to be continued. There is a dual motivation behind the big, black cat. The picture has greatly promoted the slowing of traffic on our busy road, which Eden’s children and traveling cats continue to appreciate. The addition of a hot air balloon (and hopefully, a taller ladder) is anticipated this spring. Come by and have a look. After all, you can’t miss the broad side of a barn. . . Eden Park has a scrap metal dumpster on the east side of the arena available for scrap metal donations. The dumpster will be there for one month. Come and deposit your scrap metal today! |
