The Wolf Creek Foundation recently hosted its 35rd military family retreat the weekend of May 4 - 6. Over the years we have asked members of the community to volunteer to serve the seven meals involved during the course of the weekend. The response has been overwhelming and we are very proud to be part of such a generous community. We would especially like to thank the students from Waypoint Academy. They volunteered for two meals and helped with the families’ Amazing Race on Saturday. Thank you Waypoint! The interaction between the volunteers and the retreat participants brings the quality of the retreat program to a whole new level. The fami- lies leave knowing that they have the support of the local community and the volunteers leave with a greater sense of what these families sacrifice for the freedoms that we sometimes take for granted. Commenting on the retreat, Col. Kolbe, Former 75th Air Base Wing Vice Commander, stated, “In my career, I have never experienced such wonderful community support.” We would like to sincerely thank the following people for taking this retreat such a great experience: Bonnie Watts; Tim, Arianna, and Chloe Ludlum; Darin, Hayden, Devyn, Kjirstin, and Trygg Mich’l; Tina Rector; Bruce Keswick; Paula Califano; Ellen and Kevin Baggs; Allie Clark; Cynthia Beck; Mari Roberts; Christina Witt; Janice Newton; Jeannie Wendell; Aspen, Hunter, Justin, Jori, and Ridge Torman; Steve Munson; Sally Rajamaki; Beth Topa; George Moldenhauer; Bev Nichol; Richard and Miranda Menzies; Laura Dunning; and Waypoint Academy Students. We would also like to thank Summit/ Powder Mountain for their generosity in donating Arbor Lodge for our recent benefit dinner as well as the greatly reduced rate for the retreat weekend. Thank you! We are indeed honored to live and work among such fantastic people! Sue Munson, Wolf Creek Foundation Eighth-annual Dyer’s Woad Roundup a Success By all accounts, the community’s eighthannual dyer’s woad roundup (Weeds Day) in Ogden Valley on May 12 was a success. Even a cold, blustery wind couldn’t keep volunteers away. Each spring, for many years, The Ogden Valley news has endeavored to educate and remind readers about the responsibility of clearing this and other state-listed noxious weeds from their private property, which is mandated by state law. While many have made various efforts to respond to this call, others have been less conscientious or haven’t had the means to address the problem. Unfortunately, the complete eradication of dyer’s woad, or any other noxious weed, is hampered by the same age-old problem—unless there is buy-in from everyone in the community to address the problem, the efforts of those who expend the energy and resources to do so are hampered by those who don’t. Soon, a self-defeating attitude is generated community-wide, which leads to little being done to address the issue at all. The task seems futile as one neighbor clears a field, and another next door does not. This sense of futility was, in great mea- sure, buried after Representative Gage Froerer took the cause on personally. Five years ago, he called a meeting with representatives from UDOT, the U.S. Forest Service, Weber County, Weber Pathways, and a couple of concerned community members who had approached him about the uncontrolled spread of the weed in the valley. Now each year, volunteers work tirelessly during the morning, moving throughout the Valley on private and public lands to remove this noxious weed, depriving millions of potential dyer’s woad seeds the opportunity of finding another spot in Ogden Valley to germinate and continue the destructive regeneration cycle. Again, many thanks to Representative Gage Froerer for his continued support—for rallying around this cause—and for also continuing to serving up some pretty great hamburgers, along with Representative Froerer, to hungry volunteers that return to Eden’s Park Bowery for lunch. Also, thanks and kudos to the many volunteers who came out to cut, pull, or spray hundreds of dyer’s woad plants. Volunteers even showed up from the other side of the Wasatch Front to help for the day We would also like to thank the many business owners who generously donated gifts for the drawing that was held after lunch was served. These businesses and donors include: The Oaks Detours Utah State Representative Gage Froerer Weber County Commissioner Kerry Gibson • Nordic Valley Ski Resort • Diamond Peak • Valley Nursery • Recreation Outlet • Valley Market • Eden Park & Bowery We would also like to thank others who have continued to battle dyer’s woad and other state-listed noxious weeds throughout the season and year, including personnel from the U.S. Forest Service and Weber Pathways, who assisted with organizing the effort in Ogden Valley, along with a day’s effort along the Wasatch Front. Thanks to all. • • • • If you would like your submitted items returned, please send a stamped, selfaddressed envelope.
