NJHS is a national organization that focuses on five character traits: leadership, scholarship, service, character, and citizenship. NJHS Membership is an excellent way to show positive character traits and opportunities students have taken advantage of in school. Qualifying and being active in NJHS is also beneficial for those who will be applying for college and scholarships in a few years. It can also provide opportunities for future leadership positions. Only current 7th and 8th graders may apply as membership for the 2012-2013 school year. To apply, students must have a 3.5, or higher, grade point average for both first and second quarters of the 2011-2012 school year, and then maintain this average. In addition, to apply, students must have acceptable citizenship marks, with no “N’s” or “U’s” on their record. Applications for NJHS must be completed and turned in by March 30. A $10 fee must accompany the application request. An induction ceremony to honor new and continuing members will be held Wednesday, April 25. For more information, please call Ms. Perrin at 801-476-5366. WOODY cont. from page 1 bus because he loves the people, and they love him. As Woody says, “These folks are doing something they love, something really unique. There isn’t a ski area anywhere that offers this type of service. So they’re happy, really happy. I love just watching them ski down to the bus with smiles on their faces from ear to ear.” He has lots of funny stories, as well as some he won’t share, but one of his favorites goes like this: “A young guy was coming down the east side, fairly high up the hill, and when he saw me heading uphill, he literally skied right over the snow bank and across the hood of the bus so I’d pick him up. I didn’t have much choice!” recounted Woody. Naturally, there have been many changes over the years. In 2002, Woody noted, “The Olympics really brought change. That’s when the high rollers started coming by. My tips went up from 25 to 50 cents per ride to $1 - $5, and there definitely were much fancier outfits. Not as much duct tape holding things together.” In the early days, there wasn’t a designated bus turnaround like there is today. “I’d just stop everywhere I saw a person waiting, and if it was a lady, why naturally I would get out and help her with her skies. And then I got asked for tissues on the bus quite a few times so I always made sure I had a full box on hand,” said Woody. The founders of world-renowned Deer Valley might be surprised to learn that the levels of service for which they’ve become famous were first implemented by Woody! Woody has many repeat customers who come from all around the country and world looking for him. Nowadays, there are four buses running on any given day so there’s only a 25% chance Woody will be the driver. But he proudly declares, “I hired and trained every driver and they are all good folks, hardworking.” While he loves all his fans equally, he is rather fond of a person he will only call “The Godfather.” He’s an avid out-of-state Alta devotee who comes up to Powder Mountain a week or two each year with his buddies to catch some “freshies” at Powder Mountain after Alta gets tracked out. “He’s a very generous guy. My tip jar rarely sees that kind of appreciation!” said Woody. Powder Country does not discriminate on age. The youngest skier [was then] 3-year-old Park Wayman, who has ties to several local families, while the most senior devotee [was] a youthful 82. Thanks for all the good times Woody . . . .
