The animals were driven southward, and last evening City Marshal Solomon of Salt Lake and his men got them and secured probably one of the men accused of the larceny. The horses were placed in a field below town on Monday, and yesterday were taken to a livery stable. The police on Tuesday evening arrested one of the men who claimed them, and yesterday Sheriff Belnap came down after him. The accused is named Wm. Marshall, and as he was being taken to the City Hall after his arrest, he made an attempt to escape. Near the hall, when he thought the officers were off their guard, he made a break for liberty. He was quickly grappled by two policemen and after a sharp struggle was overcome and placed behind iron bars. Sheriff Belnap came to Ogden last evening with the alleged thief and placed him in the County jail. The Sheriff and Sheriff Ward of Evanston, who rendered valuable assistance, had a long trip in pursuit of the man, going as far east [as] Evanston, and to Woodruff in Bear Lake County, coming to Salt Lake yesterday. Mr. Chadwick also came to Salt Lake and last night started for Ogden with his horses, where he is expected to arrive today. Besides the horses, a saddle, belonging to Mr. Trace of Marriott, which was stolen from the Co-op. yard some time ago, and a new wagon cover, evidently the one stolen from Mr. Wilson on the Bench some nights ago, were also found. Note: The following news article about horse thieves was related in the “The Standard” over one hundred years ago. His average speed on that trip was about 93 mph, reaching altitudes of 1,700 feet. “I had been circling the valley for about 45 minutes, but couldn’t find a thermal updraft. I tried soaring above the ridgeline; I was able to maintain altitude, but couldn’t gain any lift.” Mockler stated that he was in Utah as part of the 15-Meter National Soaring Championship being held in Cache County. About 60 competitors all the way from the east to the west coast and Canada competed in this year’s event. Mockler added that gliding is a family tradition that his father began. Dave made his first solo flight on his 14th birthday. Today he flies a German-made ASG-29 glider with at 50-foot wing span. The glider weighs about 630 lb. empty, and 1,220 lbs. fully-loaded with the pilot and about 400 pounds of water ballast. “It’s amazing what these airplanes can do, because they are so efficient.” Mockler’s 17-year old daughter Blair helps with crewing, or ground support, which includes helping with launching, landing, and preparations. His youngest daughter, 14-yearold Sarah, and his wife Amy also lend support. Pictured abOVe are Past members Of the huntsVille utah lds stake Presidency and high cOuncil frOm 1978. But the neatest thing is the people here; they are the friendliest and most gracious that we’ve ever met; it was wonderful. We had a very positive experience, and met many new friends that were very hospitable.” For more information about gliding, visit <SSA.org> MonuMenT cont. from page 1 now the LDS Church Historian and a member of the Seventy. In an emotional and inspiring prayer, he honored those patriots who founded the nation and all those who have served her until the present day to keep her free.
