Show Page 4 The Ogden Valley news Volume XIX Issue VIII August 1, 2011 Encore Wine Pairings Dinner Scheduled Marco Stevanoni, owner of Vitalia Imports, a Salt Lake City-based wine importer, will host the second gourmet Wine Pairings Dinner at Harley & Buck’s on Thursday, August 11. “The first Pairings Dinner was a blast. The food was fantastic, the wines were amazing and I learned so much from Marco,” said Leigh Ann Fincher of PPR Real Estate and Utah Lodging. The August event will feature wines of Tuscany, from the Azienda Agricola Testamatta vineyard. Harley & Buck’s will be pouring one white, three reds and a dessert wine. The wines are renowned, made exclusively from traditional Italian grapes, and receive moderate amounts of oak treatment to give them unique flavor. Craig Bonham, the Owner/Chef of Harley & Buck’s, has created an elaborate five-course menu that will include seared shrimp scampi ravioli with brown butter sauce, an Italian family-style antipasto platter with rustic meats and cheeses, dry-aged prime porter house steak with arugula and shaved parmesan, New Zealand rack of lamb lollipops, and a dessert. Each course will be paired with a special wine. Marco will present the wines throughout the evening, educating guests on the vineyards and the varietals. The community is invited to attend this popular event. The Wine Pairings Dinner is $75 per person. Dinner is by reservation only with seating limited to 75 people. Harley & Buck’s is located at 3900 North Wolf Creek Drive in Eden. For more information, or to make reservations please call 801-745-2060. Garden 1 – Grounds for Coffee, Sunflower Community Garden – 3005 Harrison Blvd. Dan and Suzie Dailey put shovel to dirt and brought an idea to life. Just behind their coffee shop they built 37 4x12 foot plots, provided irrigation, and “they came.” Lucky residents of Ogden with a desire for their own plot of soil flocked to the gardens. On the morning of the tour, Grounds for Coffee will offer complimentary drinks in the Sunflower Garden. Garden 2 – The Stanley Garden – 2733 Fillmore Ave. - Built on just under an acre by Dolly and Rich in 1930, this home garden is one of three that originally converged in a common area affectionately known as “The Hollow.” The Hollow is now part of the Calton property (Garden 3). Due to multiple ownership changes—including an Oscar-winning set designer—mature trees, a stone staircase leading to the Hollow, and Rich’s Tram tracks that led to The Hollow are all that remain of the original landscape. Casey Stone Hand Thrown Ceramics will be offered for sale, along with music by Kevin Kula, and tasty food samples from Union Station Fermentation. Garden 3 – The Calton Garden – 2745 Fillmore Ave. - Much of the landscape remains around the original portion of this home built by Ruth and Willard Eccles in the 1930’s, including the north garden gate, huge beech trees, extensive plantings, stone retaining walls and steps, and the red concrete rear patio that features the Dragon Fountain. Look for the Eccles’ family names printed in the original concrete patio, and the Hil-A-Vator tram and tracks that once brought supplies to the pool area. Garden 4 – The Pulley Garden (Front Yard Only) – 2815 Buchanan Ave. Installed by the homeowners and designed by Laurie Van Zandt of The Ardent Gardener Landscape Design, this once-barren front lawn is now a serene, user friendly, Asian-inspired beauty. Lush plantings of Japanese Maple, Asiatic Lilies, Siberian Iris, and Sweet Woodruff groundcover surround the lawn area and provide a visual boundary from the street in this cool, green-hued garden. Chalk art by the Pulley Children. Book signing by Bill Fenimore of The Wild Bird Store, and raffle prize, a succulent basket, provided by Willard Bay Gardens. Garden 5 – The Galbraith Garden – 1523 27th St. - Huge, mature trees and rolling lawns are the backdrop for this whimsical, cottage shade garden. Low stone walls reminiscent of Olde English-style pasture walls surround the rear gardens, while allowing for “borrowed” vistas to the east. Unique planters created from found items such as an antique hospital crib, laundry baskets and a utility sink are crammed with colorful annuals throughout the gardens. Ogden Valley Land Trust Information Booth. Garden 6 – The Gochnour Garden – 2703 Hill Dr.- The garden known as Fern Corner has been a fixture in Ogden for over 80 years. It is home to one of the few Giant Sequoias in Utah and has had only three owners. Fine Art by Karla DuVall for sale, BeeHive Cheese samples, and the lovely sounds of Che Zuro. Garden 7 – The Hall Garden – 1528 Maule Dr. - This is the third property that once shared Ruando Spa, and was originally owned by Val and Ann Browning. Formal English style plantings created by Shalae Larson on an axis to the home and a huge rose garden with hundreds of shrubs make up the front gardens. The rear gardens went through a recent extensive renovation with the help of landscape architect Scott Van Dyke. Our Children’s Earth products for sale, Trudy’s Poppin’ Johnny Ice Cream, and the sounds of Omgaia. ( Garden 8 – Weil Garden – 2810 Wheelock Ave. - This small, steep lot manages to gracefully carve out space enough for a swimming pool, flower gardens, outdoor fireplace, patio with shade structure, herb garden, and vineyard in a garden designed by Laurie Van Zandt and installed by the owners. A small pergola on the front porch ties the front garden to the rear. This is a wonderful garden for entertaining and is very kid friendly. Artist Paulette Johnson and musician Frater Auerelius. Garden 9 – The Wadsworth Garden – 2880 Wheelock Ave. - The “bones” of these gardens— unique, contemporary water feature, mature birch, and sycamore trees planted in 1942, and covered back porch area—were recently enhanced with a significant garden renovation. Tickets are $15 for Ogden Nature Center members and $20 for nonmembers. All proceeds will benefit the Ogden Nature Center. Tickets may be purchases online at www. ogdennaturecenter.or or in person at the Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th Street. They may also be purchased at Grounds for Coffee on 30th and Harrison, or at the gardens the day of the tour. |
