Show The Ogden Valley news Volume XIX Issue XIII Page 13 May 1, 2011 huntsville 4th of July Committee announces speech Contest The Huntsville 4th of July Committee has announced a speech contest. Prizes will be awarded as follows: $500 for 1st place, $300 for 2nd place, and $200 for 3rd place. The committee’s goal is to encourage and increase appreciation for the freedoms we enjoy in America. As Americans, too often we take these freedoms for granted. There have been many sacrifices made in order to preserve these freedoms for our generation. We expect participants to address these freedoms and the special people who have provided them for us. Requirements 1. Those entering the speech contest must be between the ages of 15 and 18. 2. Reside within the Huntsville zip code area (84317). 3. Speeches must be typewritten. 4. Speech must have a cover page that includes the name, age, address, and phone number of the entrant. This information must be on the cover page only—not on the speech itself. 5. The speech must be no longer than 3½ minutes when spoken. 6. Submit a copy of the speech by June 17 to Willie Richardson, 7169 E. 200 S., Huntsville, Utah or mail it to PO BOX 96. 7. Contest day will be June 25 at the Huntsville Town Hall. It will be held at 11:00 a.m. 8. Speeches will be judged by non-resident judges. 9. Winning speeches will be given during Huntsville’s Patriotic Program on the 4th of July. For more information, please contact Rosemary Waite at 745-4401, or Willie Richardson at 745-2096. This contest is being sponsored by ATK. Winners Announced for North Ogden Kiwanis Freedom Essay Contest For the past two years, North Ogden Kiwanis has offered an opportunity for students in grades 4 through 12 in the Weber/Fremont “cone” of schools to earn scholarships. The challenge for students has been to write an essay about freedom-related subjects. In 2011, high school students wrote about The Federalist Papers and the impact they had on ratification of the Constitution. Junior high students wrote about the authors of the Federalist Papers— Hamilton, Madison, and Jay. Elementary school students wrote about The Liberty Bell, its history and purpose. Participating schools reported that 1055 students took up the challenge. The Kiwanis Club offered the contest to 24 schools in the Weber County School District and 18, including home schools, elected to participate. Each school selected up to five of their best essays and forwarded them to Kiwanis. A select panel of judges completed the final evaluations in early April and the top five in three age/grade groups have earned scholarship awards. The judging process is “double blind” with only a number identifying the 62 finalist essays. Judges’ scores were not shared in the process. Students were notified by mail the week of April 11. The fifteen winners and their parents will be invited to an awards dinner hosted by Kiwanis, at the Senior Center on June 7. Scholarship amounts range from $2000 to $100. Perhaps the best explanation of why hold a Freedom Essay Contest is that the Kiwanis Club sees a need to promote the importance of fully valuing our freedoms. Freedom can be an elusive quality; if you don’t have freedom you definitely know it. If freedom is taken for granted, misused, or abused, we may not be aware that it is. The insights gained as a result of researching and writing about the history or our freedoms is valuable to the student and to the community at large.
