The Young Learning Academy—Now enrolling for the 2010-11 school year Tina Young, the director of The Young Learning Academy, is now enrolling preschool students for the 2010-11 school year. Young has a degree in Early Child Education and Elementary Education from Utah State University. She taught Kindergarten for five years, and has taught preschool for two years. The Young Learning Academy focuses on Kindergarten readiness. The curriculum includes phonics, math skills, motor skills, social skills, language arts, science, social studies, music, and movement. My daughter had a good experience with The Young Learning Academy,” says Kim Kelson of Eden. “She loved going to preschool. She loved all the friends she made, the crafts, but best of all, she knows her letters. She’s ready to read now.” “I would absolutely refer people to The Young Learning Academy,” says Shalin Bailey of Huntsville. My kids loved Mrs. Young. She was so nice, and always so happy to see the students. My kids loved the puppet shows and creative play. They learned so much in such a fun way. As a parent, I loved Young’s sick policy and the fact that she kept the preschool so clean. I didn’t have to worry about my children getting sick at school.” The Young Learning Academy is located in Eden, and classes will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays. During the 2010-11 school year there will be a class held for three-year-old students, and a second class available for four-year-olds. Enrollment is now open for fall classes. For more information, contact Tina Young at (801) 745-6335. These options are made possible by using the latest in CAD-CAM technology—CEREC restorations. How does using CEREC technology benefit you when you need to have a broken tooth fixed? This technology uses digital images in place of the typical dental impressions—decreasing the discomfort and mess usually associated with the impression material. The CEREC restorations are then made here in the office, saving you from having to deal with a temporary crown while we wait the 1-2 weeks for your final crown to come back from the dental lab. Most importantly, by using CEREC we can practice a more tooth-conserving style of dentistry. CEREC technology allows us to only remove the weak or thin parts of the tooth. In many instances, we are able to save one or two cusps or points of the tooth that are still strong and healthy. If we were to do a traditional crown, we would have to remove those healthy parts to allow the crown to fit over the whole tooth. By conserving this tooth structure, we allow the tooth to function in a more natural way. This technology requires that after we remove the weak or decayed areas of the tooth we take digital images of it. These are then placed into the CADCAM software and we are able to custom design an all-porcelain restoration that will protect the tooth and allow it to function again. This design is next digitally sent to a “mill” that we have in the office, where a solid block of porcelain is milled to the exact shape of the missing tooth structure. This process takes anywhere from four to ten minutes. Once it’s completed, the restoration is then trimmed, polished, and cemented to the tooth. You get to leave our office the same day with a beautiful, permanent solution to your broken tooth. At Iverson & Larsen Dental, we are committed to offering the best experience for our patients; we know this means keeping up with new technologies and advancements in the dental world. Many of the technologies we use speed up treatment and reduce the time needed in receiving great dental care—but, more Dr, Paul Larsen importantly, help you conserve as much of your natural tooth structure and function as possible. Please call our office if you have any questions about CEREC treatment—we’d love to hear from you. Our number is 801-745-3882. The Wolf Creek Foundation and the Air Force C.O.P.E. Retreat Program In early 2006 a chance meeting between Steve Roberts, managing partner at Wolf Creek Utah, and a chaplain from Hill Air Force Base resulted in a program that has served over 1,000 airmen and their families. Three or four times a year families that have someone scheduled to deploy within 30 days are invited to Wolf Creek for a complimentary weekend that includes luxury second home accommodations, all meals, world class recreation opportunities, a structured program to help both parents and children deal with deployment issues, and a dinner dance. The events department at Wolf Creek and the Chapel at HAFB worked together to develop this program that has held Best Practice status within the Air Force for two years. Several bases from around the U.S. have come to the Ogden Valley to observe a retreat and are working to duplicate it for their families. During each retreat, up to 200 people arrive on Friday and after orientation they can enjoy our amazing Valley with seasonal recreation or simply enjoy their family in beautiful second homes and condominiums. One of the keys to the success of this program has been the generosity of the owners of these homes and condominiums. Almost all of the lodging for each retreat is donated by the homeowners. Most of the families that attend these retreats could never afford a weekend in this type of luxury accommodation and the Wolf Creek Foundation has great appreciation for these homeowners. Many of them have donated their units for each of the 18 retreats to date. Pineview Lodge at Wolf Creek is the site for all of the meals, three training sessions for the parents, and several social functions. The Chapel has developed a program for the spouses that deals with all of the issues that arise during a deployment as well as reintegration when a spouse comes home. Out of 913 surveys returned, 98.8% reported an average three times boost in readiness for deployment after attending a retreat. Twenty one airmen reported that their marriages had been saved. Several seasoned officers have reported that in their 25- to 30-year careers, they have never been offered anything as beneficial to their families as this program. One of the unique qualities of what happens during these retreats is what is done for the children. Several base organizations, along with Air Force child development specialists, take over Snowcrest Jr. High School with a myriad of activities along with focused programming to help these children deal with the inherent fear and uneasiness that comes with a parent’s deployment. Saturday night is always a highlight of the weekend. Pineview Lodge is the site for a dinner and dance. The families dress up for complimentary family photos, the DJ has everyone out on the dance floor, and each child receives a special teddy bear. These donated bears have a voicebox for the deploying parent to record a message for their child. These are then put into the body of the bear and the child always has Mom or Dad’s voice close at hand. With the bears, the birthday cake for all those who will celebrate a birthday during deployment and the Daddy/Daughter dance everyone involved with a retreat begins to understand the sacrifices that these families make for our freedom. Occasionally, a retreat weekend will fall on one of our Music in the Mountains concert nights. All the families are invited to the concert, and in 2009, world renowned pianist and performer Jon Schmidt wrote a special song for the retreat participants and recorded it on his latest CD. When he performed it at the concert, there was a crowd of 3,000 on the mountainside and you could hear a pin drop. Those families were given a standing ovation. The next retreat in June will coincide with the first concert of the 2010 season. Anna Wilson will perform with the Crescent Super Band, and we encourage everyone to come, not only for the great music, but also to show these families how much our community appreciates them and what they give up for us. The Wolf Creek Foundation also supports the Ogden Rescue Mission, the Christmas Tree Jubilee, and Pioneer Bible Camp. This summer several of the Music in the Mountains concerts will help support other non-profits such as Cottages of Hope, the Landstuhl Hospital Care Project, and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
