We not only participate in events By Morgan Merietti Guest Speaker from Spain Visits Snowcrest By Beth Chidester, Snowcrest Student On Wednesday April 22, our eighth and ninth grade Spanish classes at Snowcrest had a guest speaker from Spain. We did a lot to prepare for our guest speaker. The day before, we watched a short video on the traditions and people of Spain, and we also wrote five questions each to ask him. Some of the questions were, ¿Cuáles deportes son populares en España? (which sports are popular in Spain?) or, ¿Cuantás personas hay en tu familia? (How many people are there in your family?), or ¿Cuál es tu comida favorita? (what is your favorite food). He answered all of our questions and also told us about many of the traditions and customs they have in Spain. One of the very first things that he told us about was his name. His full name is Dan Alejandro Fernández Gavela. We thought it was interesting that in Spain they take both their mother’s and father’s last names. He always answered other questions the best that he could. When we asked him about his favorite food he said that it was ham and we thought that was a little bit strange, but then we remembered the video we watched, which explained that ham is a very popular and traditional food. We learned that the best and most expensive hams come from pigs that have eaten acorns. Our guest had a really cool accent, which sounded different than people from Mexico or other Spanish speaking countries. He also had some really cool shiny purple shoes that we, of course, had to ask him about. He told us that they were handmade, and that he likes shoes that are flashy and get people’s attention. He also told us a lot of very interesting facts about Spain. Some of the authentic dress customs that they have are that the women wear shawls in the winter and use hand held fans when it is hot in the summer. He told us that there are mostly middle class people in Spain, which makes them different than some other Spanish-speaking countries. Also, they really do have bull fights in Spain, and are a very popular attraction. Even though some people find it cruel, he explained that it is an art form that goes back several thousand years. Overall, it was a very fun and interesting experience! Thank you Dan!
