The Eccles Community Art Center Highlights Local Artists During June, the work of three artists will be exhibited at the Eccles Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Avenue, Ogden. The paintings of Jeff Hepworth of West Haven and ceramics and tea pots of Johnny Hughes of Ogden will be on display in the Main Gallery; while in the Carriage House Gallery the paintings of Ian Ramsay of Murray will be featured. A reception for the artists is scheduled for Friday, June 4, 2010 from 6 to 9 p.m. Works will remain on exhibit through June 26, 2010. Jeff Hepworth paints landscapes with oils on canvas/linen and board mounted canvas/linen. He reveals “My landscapes are created from plein air studies, pencil sketches, and photo references in an impressionistic, luminous style. Somewhat tonal, my works have an apparent atmospheric quality in which the light source becomes the focal point of the painting.” Hepworth continues, “Though my subject matter is traditional landscapes, I paint nature in a calm, peaceful state. My compositions and landforms are simple, identifiable, and nostalgic—all of which help to make my paintings inviting and easy to live with.” Johnny Hughes is best known for ceramic frogs that adorn tea pots, vases, and bowls. Recently he has created a line of whimsical ceramics. Hughes tells how “at the age of thirteen, I saw a gentleman take a ball of dirt, put it on a wheel, spin it, and create a beautiful vase. I was hooked! During my high school years at Ogden High, I took as many ceramic classes as they would allow. At Weber State University I studied with David Cox as well as opening a music store, Kids… Toad Tape. Twenty-five years later, my son at age thirteen took a ceramic class. He loved it. We then took classes together. I was once again hooked! I continued my studies with Diane and John Shaw at the University of Utah where I also worked as an assistant for ten years.” A self-taught artist, Ian Ramsay paints watercolor in a representational style. Ramsay’s paintings usually represent his travels. He indicates that his “favorite subjects are the harbors and landscapes of Britain, Canada, the Pacific Northwest, as well as the farm land and mountain scenery of Utah.” He continues, “Recently I have enjoyed painting urban landscapes, especially locations in Japan.” An honorary lifetime member of the Utah Watercolor Society, Ramsay has work that is included in private collections in the United States, Japan, Britain, and France. His paintings are in the permanent collections of the Bennington Center for the Arts in Vermont and the Springville Museum of Art in Utah. He and his work are represented in galleries in Utah, California, Arizona, and Idaho. In 2009 his paintings and an instructional article were published in the International Artist magazine. We invite you to visit the Eccles Community Art Center and our galleries. Regular gallery hours are weekdays 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For information, please contact the art center staff at 801-392-6935 or visit the art center’s website at <www.ogden4arts.org> Roosters Brewing Co.
