This year the spring open burning period for Weber County begins May 1 and ends May 31. However, Weber County Fire Marshall Ted Black states that permits can be obtained immediately for agricultural and horticultural burn permits, regardless of lot size. Black stated, “We want everyone to begin their spring burns as soon as possible to cut down the risk of an uncontrolled fire.” Black also explained that prunings from fruit trees to rose bushes may be burned, in addition to weeds and debris from small garden spots, yards, and large fields. Permits for burns in unincorporated Weber County may be obtained during regular business hours from any Weber County fire station, including Eden’s and Huntsville’s. The written permit identifies the products that may be burned and general safety requirements. The permits authorize permit holders to start and maintain a fire under prescribed conditions and serves as a notification of intent to burn. The permit does not relieve an individual from personal liability due to damages should the fire escape control. Permits are issued for agricultural- and horticultural-type products and growing vegetation only, and include the following: the burning of weed growth along ditch banks incident to clearing for irrigation purposes; the burning of weeds and brush along fence lines; stubble; leaves; and prunings from trees, bushes, and plants. Permits may not be issued for burning trash, garbage, waste, lumber, tires, or oil-based products. For more information, call Fire Marshall Ted Black at 801-782-3580.
