Wait. What is that sound? A chorus of voices suddenly rises as students sing the Mexican hot chocolate stirring song. Starting out slow, the rhyme, “Bate, Bate, Chocolate” (stir, stir the chocolate) begins to ring through the class. The beat is so contagious that soon the whole class is chanting the song, faster and faster. Now you know that the authentic Mexican hot chocolate is being made. Students take turns mixing the hot chocolate by spinning an authentic wooden “molinillo,” a kitchen utensil used to whisk and froth the milk and chocolate. was a part of the Mexican culture. Children would stir their hot chocolate to the beat of the rhyme. Students also learned many new Spanish words during this activity. They were given the recipe in Spanish and had to translate it into English. The class learned how to say measuring units and other important words related to cooking. It was a great learning experience! The Spanish II classes really enjoyed learning about Mexican culture, and they, of course, enjoyed the delicious foods that came with it! Gracias Mr. Wolthuis! We live in a world of breathtaking material plenty. That has freed hundreds of millions of people from day-to-day struggles and liberated us to pursue more significant desires: purpose, transcendence, and spiritual fulfillment. One quick example of design that Mr. Pink gives in his book is found in the 2000 U.S. Presidential election and the subsequent thirtysix day “snarl” over whether George Bush or Al Gore had won the electoral votes from the state of Florida and thus the Office of the Presidency of the United States. The voting record that became known as the “Butterfly Ballot” was in most opinions a bad design because in Palm Beach County, which was heavily democrat, a lot of voters punched out holes for both Pat Buchanan and for Al Gore, not realizing that their ballot would be thrown out. Consequently, George W. Bush won Florida by 537 votes, which gave him enough electoral votes (270) to become the leader of the free world. do you now look at your human senses a little bit different? The typhoons tore out much of the area’s train and communication systems, ripped roofs off of many, many buildings, and debilitated much of the region’s infrastructure. There was much work to do. I sure look at things differently since my mind has been opened up to a whole new realization of my interaction with the people and with my environment. I now live in a better world thanks in part to books like A Whole New Mind. I hope you will have the great opportunity to read it at some point in your busy lives!
