Lori Butters from the Weber-Morgan Health Department was unable to confirm this report. “The Utah Department of Health is conducting the testing and responsible for the reporting of cases, and they are only keeping track of the number of cases where patients are actually hospitalized. Doctors are supposed to send blood samples, if they suspect a case, to the Utah Public Health Lab. “I can say that H1N1 is here in the community and it is prevalent. By only counting hospital stays from the virus, can we determine its severity in the community.” As of June 26, eight hospitalized cases had been identified by health officials. A report on KSL news stated that it is estimated that over 50% of the population has been exposed to the virus. Butters also stated, “Precautions in preventing the spread of H1N1 are simple. Stay home if you are sick, and wash your hands regularly. Symptoms include typical flu symptoms—stiff neck, high temperature, and coughing. Since no one previously had built up an immunity to the virus, its spread has been quite rapid.” Great horned owls are generally secretive birds and are rarely seen. They are one of the largest of To learn more about H1N1, visit the the owl family and are suitable for use in falconry. District Court Decision Creates Frustration, Confusion in Powder Mountain Legal Battle By Shanna Francis Ogden Valley News Frustrating was one of the reactions to a legal decision handed down in Second District Court in Ogden on Tuesday, June 16 where Judge Ernie Jones presided. The judge’s ruling was frustrating because petitioners and defendants in the Powder Mountain dispute over the selection process of mayor and town council members in the newly proposed incorporated Powder Mountain town, are, basically, back at square one. Powder Mountain representatives, represented by Salt Lake attorney David Jordan, sued the county for failing to appoint candidates they recommended for the town’s leadership positions they hold is mandated by a state law that was in place at the time the haggling first began. The defendant, Weber County, claims that the law gives them the authority to create a list of potential candidates by determining the names of qualified candidates. In failing last year to select only the names Powder Mountain was in favor of, developers rejected the recommendations by the county, and narrowed the list back down to names they had initially selected for the newly created town’s administrative and legislative positions. Judge Jones stated that developers are still able to strike names from a commission generated list if they have a legitimate reason POWDER MTN. cont. on page 3 A sudden microburst of wind in Ogden Valley on June 25 caused power outages in 2400 homes and businesses and took down this tree in Liberty, blocking traffic in both directions on Hwy. 162. Neighbors were quick to help remove debris and to get things moving again. Ogden Valley News Due to impact concerns related to the transport of Valley Elementary’s portable classrooms down Ogden Canyon, the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has made a special concession to the Weber School District to assist them in this move. Along with this concession, two stipulations were added. UDOT required that the portable classrooms be moved during the middle of the night between the hours of 12:00 and 6:00 a.m., and on one day only instead of two as previously planned. These restraints were implemented because of the effect the project could have on the flow of traffic up and down the canyon, and the negative impact road restrictions could have on several Ogden Canyon businesses. As a result of these limitations, the Weber School District has decided that the challenges of moving the portable classrooms down Ogden Canyon are too numerous; thus, they have decided to wait until next fall to move the portable classrooms. At that time they will move them over Trappers Loop and down I-84 in Weber Canyon after the Weber Canyon construction project is completed in late September, and the prohibition on wide loads through the construction zone has been removed. UDOT representatives state that they believe the decision to wait and change routes is the best decision, and fully support the Weber School District’s assessment of the matter.
