I am looking to create at least five or six more portraits.” Johansen’s exhibit will also be on display at the Huntsville Branch of the Weber County Library in October. He adds, “It will be a public awareness art exhibit featuring children and adults who are suffering, or who have passed away as a result of childhood diseases. After completing a very successful art show this past October, I spent some time meditating on how I could best use some of my talent in painting portraits. I concluded that my next show would have a public awareness theme and would be dedicated to children (maybe some adults). I would hope it to have an emotional and spiritual impact on both the person being painted and the viewing audience. There is a place for people to acquaint themselves with the pain of others—a place of understanding. “I have painted portraits of hundreds of people who have passed away. I remember one little boy who somehow communicated with me while I was painting him. I found out he had passed away only after I had unveiled the portrait for his mother. It was one of the most profound moments of my painting career. “I will consult with each family to determine which ones will be included in the exhibit. The portrait will be painted immediately upon confirmation that funding for the framing is available. Framing costs between $60 and $300, depending on preference and available funding. The free portrait itself has a value of $400 to $600. The framed portrait will be available immediately following the exhibit or in cooperation with the recipient family. I am asking that each family inform me if they prefer no media coverage of their child’s portrait.” Johansen has been painting portraits for more than 30 years. “I don’t know the exact number of portraits I have done, but I am probably close to 500. It was not my career to start with. I had to feed my family some other way. It was a hobby after receiving my Fine Arts Degree from BYU and Weber State College. Other circumstances took my time. But I am now retired from my other career and am doing other volunteer work. I love to paint portraits and thought this would be a good way to satisfy my own desire to paint and to, perhaps, honor children.” If you would like more information regarding Johansen’s work or his offer to paint a child’s portrait, please contact him at 801-745-3331, or email him at <cesportharcourt@yahoo.com> About the Artist Though Harold “JR” Johansen has lived in Huntsville for the past 34 years, he was born and raised in Loa, Utah.
