The analog technology is the format used since the beginning of TV several decades ago. The announcement also states that you can now receive digital television if you have the right type of equipment. This is true only because all the primary broadcasting stations have already converted to digital format. But for the convenience of much of the public which have not yet purchased a new TV or converter box, the broadcast stations are broadcasting both formats until the deadline date of February 17, 2009. If you are among the flatlander folks along the Wasatch Front, you would now be able to receive “High Definition Digital” television if you have a converter box or a new TV set with a digital tuner, and it can be received with a traditional roof top antenna. This is not true, however, for us folks in Ogden Valley. Our translator station has not yet been converted. To accomplish this will require a capital investment of several hundred thousand dollars. This includes the expense of establishing a new microwave relay station at the top of Mt. Ogden. Your Ogden Valley Translator Board is negotiating with the Weber County Sheriffs’ office, the Weber County Commissioners, and the Utah Communication Agency Network (UCAN) for a joint project at our Ogden Valley site for an emergency communication station along with our translator station. This shows promise for us to purchase our new equipment. There will be other improvements at our station such as a stand-by generator and possibly a new tower. We may have to accomplish the conversion in two phases. For example, we would first purchase the receiving equipment to bring the digital signal to our station, then rebroadcast it in analog using our old equipment. The second phase would be obtaining the digital broadcasting equipment as funds become available. The FCC will allow the translator stations to re-broadcast analog (low power) for some yet undefined period of time following February 17, 2009. So what does this mean for the folks in Ogden Valley? We will not be able to receive digital TV until the translator station conversion is completed. In the meantime, your Translator Board pledges to continue to provide analog television as we do at the present time. Therefore, we advise Valley residents to perhaps postpone purchasing a digital TV until we have completed the conversion. But, on the other hand, you may want to take advantage of a government program that provides coupons (two per household) worth $40 each for the purchase of converter boxes. There is a limited number of coupons available. To get one, visit http:// www.dtv2009.gov or call 1-888-DTV-2009 (1-888-388-2009). As an Ogden Valley TV Board we appreciate your support and ask for your patience. Many claim that the new “high definition digital” technology is such an advancement that it will be worth all this effort. We are committed to preserve the American tradition of “free over the air television.” Ogden Valley Translator Board meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Ogden Valley Library. Meetings are open to the public and visitors are welcome. |
