Carolyn states that her greatest role models have been her parents and leaders in her church and community who have helped her realize that she can make a difference. Carolyn believes that in order to achieve her best, she needs to look for the best in others and help them achieve their dreams. She believes everyone has good qualities and the world becomes a better place if even one person can believe their worth. Carolyn currently teaches 6th grade at Valley Elementary. She believes her biggest accomplishment has been to rear her six children who have all attended college, are not afraid to be leaders, enjoy serving others, and contribute to the communities in which they live. Along with her team of 6th grade teachers, she has received awards for Toyota Math Team Presidential Excellence in Mathematics, and Science Teaching, Toyota Science Team, and USA Today All USA Teacher Team. The youth have taught Carolyn patience, a good sense of humor, to never give up, and to always try your hardest. Kenzie Faye Wright is owner/operator of Foxfire Promotions where she makes and sells all kinds of screen printed items. She began working at a pizza restaurant when she was only 13 years old. Since then, she has worked as a waitress, counselor in a troubled youth wilderness program, rock layer, tile layer and as an ice cream server. While attending Dixie State College, she was named Most Outstanding Freshman. Preferring the flexibility and variety of being an independent business owner, Kenzie decided Kenzie Wright to start her own business, that she built from the ground up. Over the past several years, she has donated many of her unique creations, such as crocheted hats to deserving individuals and charities. Kenzie paid her own expenses for a two-week humanitarian mission to Peru through Christmas Box International. Each year, Ascension Lutheran Church sponsors a “Grace Race” fundraiser. Last year, Kenzie, who is not a member of this church, donated, free of charge, her services and printed and supplied 300 shirts to the church. She credits her parents with teaching her the importance of being resourceful in business and maintaining a positive “can do” attitude. While she was very young, her mother made lollipops, which they would sell for a quarter to a local church camp. P.O. WALL THAT HEALS cont. from page 1 and equipment all have to be continually upgraded and maintained. Also, when a station goes down, it requires a lot of testing to determine the problem. In the winter, the Eden station can only be accessed by snowshoes or snowmobiles.” With well over 100 translator stations covering 29 counties, Utah has more than any other state in the nation because of its geography—mountains tend to obstruct translator signals. According to board members, in about 25 of these counties, government leaders cover the costs out of the county coffers. “In Weber County, we’ve been trying to maintain service on a very limited budget without outside funding.” The Eden translator station existed many years prior to the establishment of the special service district. Weber County purchased the property in December of 1968, and provided retransmission of the Salt Lake City local TV channels to area residents. In addition to adding more stations, the service district recently established a micro-wave relay station on Mount Ogden to provide “high definition” on some channels. This station is necessary to relay digital TV transmission to the Wolf Creek station. Board members state, “Our goal is to continue improving television service to Valley residents, which is currently free, as new technology evolves. Our service is available to approximately 10,000 residents in the Valley—many of whom are senior citizens, retirees, shut-ins, or young families who rely on this television service for news, entertainment, and emergency alerts/ warnings or announcements such as storm warnings, road or school closures, Amber Alerts, etc. Our present cash reserve and yearly budget does not allow us to make this one-time investment of $260,000 for the conversion to digital format. Without the conversion, the American tradition of ‘free over the airwaves’ television will no longer be available to the residents of Ogden Valley.” Board members recently met and spoke with Weber County Commissioners who state there is nothing they can do to help. But translator board members disagree, “Most counties within the state cover all the costs of running translator stations. We have been asking them to ‘step up to the plate’ to help provide funding for the conversion, but have been told there is nothing they can do. After doing all we can do to secure funding for the conversion to digital, it is time for them to help as other county entities do.” Executive Director LeGrand Bittes with the Utah Association of Special Districts stated, “Special service districts are a component unit of the county that created them and, as such, should receive financial reports from special service districts. It is also recommended, or required, that counties receive and review additional annual reports from special service districts under their creation. Board members are asking Valley residents who use Ogden Valley translator services to secure free public broadcasting service to contact Weber Commissioners Ken Bischoff, Craig Dearden, and Jan Zogmaister to request their help in generating or providing funding for this digital conversion requirement. The commissioners can be reached at their office phone at 399-8401. Weber County Ogden Valley Recreation/ Transmission Special Service District meetings are held the second Wednesday of the month at the Ogden Valley Library at 7:00 p.m. The meetings are open to the public. |
