Show Volume XV Issue XII The Ogden Valley news Page June 1, 2008 Eden Kindergartener Wins Arbor Day Poster Contest Olivia Chieppa of Eden, Utah was judged and awarded The Best Kindergarten Poster for this year’s Arbor Day Poster Contest for the Northern Region of Utah. Olivia attends St. Joseph’s Catholic Elementary School, and competed not only in her school but her poster was judged from amongst 50 elementary schools in the Northern Region. The theme for this year’s contest was “Trees are Terrific.” She received a gift certificate and a certificate of achievement, among other prizes, from the Utah Arbor Day Committee. Valley Piano Students Compete in National and State Programs Olivia Chieppa First Annual Cowboy for Kids Youth Poetry Contest—Valley students take home top prizes Three elementary schools (Valley, West Weber, and Hooper) and three junior high schools (Rocky Mountain, Wahlquist, and Snowcrest) in Weber County were chosen to participate in the First Annual Cowboy for Kids Youth Poetry Contest. Approximately 50 entries were received in the contest. On April 25, 2008, at Enable Industries, the semifinalists recited their poems before three judges—Matt Urry, Stan Tixier, and Lisa Stubblefield. Contestants were judged on appearance, memorization, poem cadence, and stage presence. From Valley Elementary, Marguerite Bennett placed first and Nathan Collins took second. On May 9 during the first annual Golden Spike Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival held in Ogden, Marguerite and Nathan, along with the rest of the finalists, participated on stage and received their awards. Congratulations to Marguerite and Nathan! History Student to Represent Utah in National Competition In this bustle my pony tripped, And left me tumbling upon my hip. Riding by Long Horns of the west, We are cowboys, the very best. -- By Marquerite Bennett Congratulations goes to the following piano students for successfully participating in the National Federation of Music Clubs Festival at the Piano Gallery this past spring: Hudson Barrong; Brandon Foremaster; Harrison, Taylor, and Kennedie Johnson; Noah Pollard; Ulu Vaatuitui; and Alexis Wendell and Michael Wendell. The National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals program is designed to promote study and stimulate interest in American and world music literature, and encourage each participant to reach a high standard of musical achievement. Hudson Barrong, Whitney Dabb, and Noah Pollard also successfully participated in the Utah Music Teacher’s Association Achievement in Music (AIM) program that is designed to encourage teachers and students to enhance their interest in many phases of musical learning, and to establish high standards of attainment for students. Noah Pollard and Ulu Vaatuitui also competed in the 37th Annual USU Piano Festival this past spring at Utah State University. The pianists are students of Louise Hill of Liberty.
