The Ogden Valley Branch library will be celebrating the cinema this summer with a FREE Family Film Festival that will run June through August. The festival will take place every Friday morning at 11:00 a.m. starting on June 13. The festival will consist of a series of movies that patrons of all ages can enjoy. Eat, drink and be entertained! All of the movies will be screened in the community room, and will feature light refreshments. Eccles Community Art Center Presents Paintings of Donna Kearney Through the month of June, the Eccles Mrs. Kearney was born in Afton, Community Art Center, 2580 Jefferson Wyoming but considers herself an Ogden Avenue, Ogden, will be disnative. In celebration of summer, kids of all ages from all over the Valley are invited to show off their best guitar shredding and dance skills. The Ogden Valley Branch Library will be hosting a summer series of Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution gaming tournaments. The tournaments will be held on June 24, July 29, and August 26 at 6:00 p.m. Gaming Tournament participants will compete in head-to-head duels until a grand champion of each game is crowned. The stars will come out to show off their moves and prove they are up to the challenge. Fantastic prizes will be awarded to winners in each category. So, if you want be crowned a champ, show up like a pro and make it happen! Even if you’ve never played any video game in your life, come take part in the action. This tournament is FREE and open to all interested. If you would like to compete in the tournament, please register at the Ogden Valley Branch Library. Also your library, The Ogden Valley Branch Library will be kicking off its season of summer events on May 27 when children and teens can sign up for the 2008 Summer Reading Programs—Fall into the Summer Time Tunnel and Metamorphosis. Fall into the Summer Time Tunnel Kids of all ages are invited to register for this free summer program. There will be seven weeks of great rewards for reading throughout summer vacation along with weekly raffles for tons of fun prizes. The library will also host lots of great events to drive away the dog days of summer. Registration is required, but beyond that, all you need is a taste for adventure! Metamorphosis: Shake It Up! Modern Shakespeare Change your outlook. Develop a skill. Expand your mind. Teens are invited to join the Ogden Valley Branch Library for a summer full of great programs and activities. This series of programs will incorporate how Shakespeare is interpreted in modern film, literature, and acting. Elizabethan customs of dress, language, and daily living will be explored while having FUN! Free Pre-Kindergarten Summer School Offered Valley Elementary is offering a free workshop for children who will enter Valley Elementary kindergarten in the fall of 2008. The workshop will focus on: • Name writing • Recognizing shapes and colors • Fine-and-gross motor skills • Number and letter recognition • Social skills • Transitioning into school The workshop will be held May 27, 28, 29; and June 2, 3, 4, 5 at Valley Elementary. Local Musicians Celebrate Summer Solstice with Food, Fun, & Song On June 21, 2008, six local singersongwriters from the Ogden area will be doing what they do best: singing and entertaining. Gathering at the Rendezvous Lodge in Huntsville, Danielle Vaughn, Dan Williams, Tim Daniels, McCall Erickson, Brett Turner, and Dave Quakenbush will take turns showcasing their original songs from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. A $25 ticket buys guests a night of music, dinner catered by Roosters, and s’mores over a bonfire. All ages welcome. Tickets go on sale May 26 at Roosters in Ogden. You can call 801-627-6171. Dan Williams Festival performer and co-organizer Danielle Vaughn says, “We are trying to create an artsy and fun atmosphere for people to come and enjoy great food, great music, and great company. We have all the perfect elements up here in the Valley—beautiful mountain scenery; a quaint, artsy location at the lodge; amazing musicians; and food with a distinct summer flavor. It’s gonna be a blast.” Other co-organizer and performer McCall Erickson says, “The six of us (musicians) have been meeting monthly at different locations in the Valley to showcase our songs for the community, and we have gotten a lot of positive response. People always ask Danielle Vaughn us when we are going to be performing again, and the demand is getting bigger. Since we are in the ‘do it yourself’ age, we decided to organize this festival and give people a chance to come and see what we are all about.” The event is sponsored by Jeff and Bonnie Hyde, Kym and Pete Buttschardt of Roosters, and Will van der Stappen with Advanced Paving and Construction. Plan on attendMcCall Erickson ing for a great evening. Area Artist Featured at Gallery 25 Jeff Hepworth will be the featured artist for the month of June at Gallery 25. He will be showing his new works at a reception during the First Friday Art Stroll on June 6 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Gallery 25 is located at 268 Historic 25th Street, Ogden. Jeff is a landscape artist from Northern Utah. His paintings are part of many private and public collections throughout the United States, Canada, and England. Jeff studied art at Weber State University, graduating in 1977. He then taught school for 30 years, where he was the recipient of numerous awards, including the Utah Alliance for Arts Education Award in 1988. He was also a finalist for Utah Art Teacher of the Year in 1989. His awardwinning pieces have also been featured in many prestigious shows and festivals throughout the West. Galleries in Utah, Alaska, and Arizona currently represent Jeff’s work. Jeff and his wife Dixie reside in West Haven. Continuing artwork will also be on display by gallery members Lucile Chamberlin, Keith Dabb, Lauri Eskelson, Carol Fielding, Liz Pierce, Mac Stevenson, Lorin Wilde, Kevin Wasden, and Doug Wride.
